Happy Grover Norquist Eve, DU… |
|
"I don't want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."
I’m old enough to remember LBJ and The Great Society. Johnson had passed a flurry of ambitious legislation to fight his War on Poverty when a funny thing happened. He ran out of money. Seems his shooting war in Southeast Asia sucked the Treasury dry, and well, Boys in the Field and all that.
So you say Obama has plans to put Americans back to work repairing infrastructure, converting the nation to alternate energy, and expanding healthcare to the uninsured. And then there's the middle class tax cut. Well, every one of those is an expensive proposition.
Things were going to be bad enough with the legacy of Bush’s tax cuts for the rich and with the $3 trillion war in Iraq. Not to mention the fact that a big pulse of 1945 Baby Boomers will turn 65 in 2010. But you take another trillion or so out of the budget and how is Obama going to begin to pay for his new priorities?
Vietnam was LBJ’s self-inflicted tragedy. This bailout could very well be Obama’s.
