His role is to set up some right wing meme that she can knock down.

Also, take note of the vibe you get while watching her debate him. There's no animosity whatsoever. He is clear who he is and clear on what he thinks. As is she. Once you get apst that, they actually seem to enjoy sparring and actually do it with some personal respect.

Don't forget, by Rachel's own account, it was none other than Pat who awakened her to the reality of being gay in America and how half the country wished her ill simply for her sexual orientation.

They are two clear eyed people who have become unlikely but effective serial debaters.

But I sort of enjoy it. He's usually this crazy old coot but for some reason I kind of enjoy their exchanges. Mostly because Rachel always gets the last word and it's fun as hell to see her do that, and also because he seems to have a shred of a sense of humor about it. Unlike most other right winger he was a good sport with Ali G, when he was asked if we should go into Iraq to find the missing BLT's he just kept laughind. So I don't totally mind him.

Now his sister Bay, that's another question. She has ZERO redeeming qualities.
