From today's LA Times...

Another great comic strip joins the never to be seen again group...

1. Leave it to Berk to crack me up while saying goodbye.

11. Maybe. He's done this before, more than once, so he'll probably be back.
He ran Bloom County originally, and canceled it, but brought back the same strip under the name "Opus." Earlier, he had written Opus out of his strip, saying that the penquin had taken over the strip and he wanted it to have a broader base, or something like that. Later, Opus returned.

So, I wouldn't write anything Breathed says in stone on the future of his strips. He has a hard time letting go. Except letting alligators go in public lakes, but that's a different story.

17. Don't forget Outland
Bloom County 1980-1989
Outland 1989-1995
Opus 2003-2008

I think Opus the Penguin will be back.

4. I, for one, am happy to see this.
Opus was only a shadow of Bloom County, which was a one-trick pony anyway.

14. YOU HAVEN'T SEEN BLOOM COUNTY???
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 01:36 PM by krispos42
CaliPeg, you have NO idea what you're missing!!!!

It ran during the Reagan era and the rise of the Religous Right! It was friggin' HILARIOUS!!! Opus, Hodge-Podge, Portnoy, Steve Dallas, Milo Bloom, Michael Binkley, Bill the Cat, Cutter John, Oliver Jones...

You'll laugh your ass off!

Get up right now, go down to your nearest used bookstore, and BUY SOME!!! "Loose Tails" was the first book, and they go on from there.

Go go go. Don't reply, just go go go!

28. Bloom County was the best thing I read in all of Junior High
My friends would pass around a copy of "Toons For Our Times" during Biology class. I got hooked.

8. My dear krispos42...
Alas, I am afraid it's true...

The last few strips had foreshadowed something coming to an end...

It's a shame...

27. I felt so sad when I read that in the LAT....
 Bloom County and Opus are treasures that will live on in their paperback books: tender still, but without the topicality that kept them so lively. I loved the vet in the wheelchair, I loved Opus... Dang.
