Maybe I'm not so bright, but seems to me that we've always lived under some form of despotism. Back in the '50s - forced childbirth for women, sexism, racism rampant, atheists lived in fear of being ostracized, sodomy against the law, gay people harassed and jailed, the teaching of evolution in schools against the law, journalism mostly one-sided, someone wrote "the man in the gray flannel suit" to shed light on human discontent, etc... Was there a small window of democracy somewhere between the '60s and '70s and then poof, gone? Maybe we aren't headed toward despotism... maybe that's what we've always lived, and it just bothers us more these days as the world crashes and burns.
