Confessions of a Voyeur
America fascinates me. From your excesses to your brashness. Your obsession with dissecting feelings, causes and emotions. Your soap operas, your sit-coms, your art and movies. Your fierce patriotic pride and your sometimes sharp, sometimes laconic wit.

DU is a place to watch ordinary Americans in action as they snark, cry, empathise and rejoice. At times it takes on the quality that makes a bad soap opera almost fun to watch. At other times your despair at the loss of all you hold dear is palpable. I cannot be shallow enough to say, 'I feel your pain', but my gut tells me you are not a happy country and something needs to change.

Unlike Caribou Barbie I can name the publications I read daily; The Scotsman, The Guardian, NYP, Wapo, Melbourne Age, BBC. Many other blogs, offbeat/fringe new sources make up the weekly world happenings menu. The ever-reliable gut is sensing a new and bold thread running through DU and the world of news sources.

People are standing up and defying the status quo, the set of rules and regulations brought raining down on you by Bushco. The pigeons are coming home to roost and each day we hear of a new, maybe small, in the general scheme of things, way in which past injustices, corruptions and castings aside of basic law and human decency are being dragged out of their grubby corners and shook out for all to see their shame.

I sense a tentative, nervous belief that Barack Obama can really take them on and win. In a fair and principled manner. And each day I return to DU that feeling seems to be growing stronger, more optimistic, more hopeful.

Whatever happens come November 4 dear Americans, myself and the world knows that a lot of you have remained staunch and true to your liberal and progressive ideals, refusing to buckle or bow to those who would beat you into submission by a constant assault of demoralization. You ARE GOING TO WIN.

GO GO GO

1. If it's worth it, they will steal it. If it's not, they wont.
But KnR for your passion, anyway, Voyeur.

3. Tom, we have a 50c bet at work
and I work for a tiny company of 6 people, all as far left as you would ever find.

Anyhow, in June Mr and Mrs Boss went to Quito. Mr Boss got deadly ill and had to be shipped to Miami. This resulted in uber-lefty Mrs Boss kicking her heels in Florida for a month till Mr. could be shipped home.

Despite all of us desperately wanting Obama to crack it, Mrs. insists that McCain will win. She listened to people in diners, motels etc.

Well Tom, today I said to her, 'your 50c doesn't look so safe now.' She agreed!

Maybe you are too close to it, maybe I'm talking shit, but I don't think Obama can lose. Not even with rigged polls, caging, suppression. This time I really believe the tide has turned. Man, you have had it too bad for too long. And if I win the 50c I'll go half with ya.

Peace

5. I hope you are right!
I'm not pleased - strike that - I'm angered - by what my government has done these last 8 years, but I'm glad I live in a country that allows me to express that opinion. And every four years we have the opportunity to change our leaders through our vote.

I believe that most of us here on DU want to be a part of the world community again.

Unfortunately, others are be short-sighted xenophobes. The rest are just plain stupid.

13. Exactly... and yes, people here are made much more comfortable
with Obama's heritage on one side of his family...

It is the perfect setup to begin serious change in how the ME perceives America.

10. Replying to my own post
only so I can include all of you.

You are abused. You are abused people, verbally and mentally beaten into believing that you have no way of changing what has become your everyday nightmare.

From over here I can see the abused starting to fight back; all in different ways. Some of you don't even know how abused you are, such is the power of the machine.

Power to the people.

14. Well, thank you. It's important to many of us how the world views us. I'm grateful for
those who have found DU and know there are many, many like-minded souls in the US.
