It's just tells a basic truth that, really, most Americans know. Asking for them to stand up and do something must be something ABC opposes.

21. Technically, the ad could have been worded slightly differently

to remove the implication that they represent all American people --
"we're American people, and we approve this ad"

not for a candidate for federal office, the broadcaster can (and obviously did) elect not to air the spot. that is their right. Just like it is our right to voice our displeasure to that decision.
