Prop 8 'Protect Marriage' ads on DU? Not cool
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 12:13 PM by anigbrowl
I know these are selected by a comptuer rather than a conspiracy, but I hope DU has some way to filter ads that undermine what the whole site is about. I think everyone here is against Prop 8 in CA and wants to keep the right to marry for gay people.

1. Contact admin, so that they know the ads are running; then they can filter them
They don't approve ads before they appear - we have to tell them what we see (which may well vary depending on you are anyway - the Prop 8 ads may only appear with Californian ISPs, for instance).

4. These "Why is Your Stomach Fat"? ads are giving me a complex!
LOL!

Leave me alone! I hate doing crunches!

2. The appearance of an ad doesn't actually undermine anything.

In fact, it costs the bastards money!

Let's all click on it a couple thousand times.

8. I like the idea, but...
I'm also cynical enough to believe that a few less clued-in people will fall for the deceptive arguments.

13. Show a little faith, would ya?
Duers aren't going to be fooled into supporting Prop 8.

3. I don't agree....
Do we want to be like NBC, or ABC, or Fox that sometimes refuses ads on the basis of ideology or political belief. Isn't that what we hate about the current media. Free speech and the Bill of Rights cannot and should not be arbitrarily set. I support equality for all, so don't flame me for being a supporter of Prop.8.That I am not....

6. A counterpoint (not a flame)
The professional news agencies are expected to be neutral. We are not neutral, we are a club of like-minded (in the loosest terms) individuals who (hopefully) universally oppose Prop 8. I see nothing wrong with DU filtering ads.

11. I think this would be true IF...
our lovely forum did not lock or delete user posts and tombstone members for posting views similar to those seen in asd on the site...

at least to be consistent, donors shouldn't be allowed to be tombstoned right?

12. Well, we aren't like NBC, ABC or Fox...
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 12:18 PM by antigone382
....which, while obviously falling precipitously short of the ideal, are intended to be nonbiased sources of news and information with neither an ideological nor a monetary agenda. While DU of course supports free speech in general in our society, this is a private site for Democrats, their lefty allies, and the groups whose concerns are represented by them. They do not allow members who openly espouse right-wing views and causes, and in keeping with that the admins have blocked ads supporting those views as well. There are several right-wing sites that will welcome people and organizations that advocate such causes.

I haven't seen this ad, but I would encourage anyone who does to contact the administrators directly and ask them to remove it. I'm sure they would be more than happy to.

5. Meh. Take their money and laugh at them. If they waste their ad money here
maybe the ads won't run somewhere else.

That's mostly a joke. We should be able to stop such offensive garbage from running here.

9. Or by right-clcking and choosing "ad block image"
That works really well too.

16. Well, you can still get to use it on the banner graphic
The one asking for donations to BO... I don't know if it's still there, but hey, there's always something one can use this feature on!

10. I'm doing all my donations through barackObama.com. It's not ads in general which bug me.
Frankly, I don't have that much money sitting about; I have outstanding bills of $5 and less.

15. I get a kick at the idea of anti-prop 8 groups sending DU money

I'm fairly certain they are not effective here.

18. I think it is a great idea
There aren't likely to be many people on DU who are likely to be persuaded to support this measure. So they are wasting their money here rather than somewhere which they could actually garner support.

19. No, let them pay Skinner anyway.
Nobody in their correct mind on DU would support the prop anyway.
