In meltdown, the words that make things worse
The Oregonian, like most media, is generally conservative. David Sarasohn, of their editorial board, writes this today:

So far, as hard as it's been to come up with direct strategies about dealing with the financial collapse, one plan is clearly vital for maintaining confidence:

Don't send President Bush out to provide reassurance.

It seems to unsettle people.

The whole editorial is a hoot, criticizing Bush's powers of persuasion and leadership (or lack thereof).

1. Obama is sooo much better at this.
I'm glad this didn't come under Obama's watch, but I think he would have done a much better job.

4. I love this part
"Over the last month, the government's key tactic for preventing panic has been to hope that people forget who's president. At times when word has slipped out, things have gone from bad to worse."

5. Noticed again today: Obama speaks, market recovers.
Dumbass speaks, market tanks. Market was down 230 when CNN cut to Obama speech. Market went into positive within minutes. CNN cut away to shit-fer-brains, market was back almost 200 negative within minutes. I know it's coincidence, but it happens every time.

6. HA! 'this sucker could go down'
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 12:13 PM by Blue State Native
But it turns out that when things get bad--and there's a moment when they do for every president, although not this bad--it helps to be able to tell your fellow politicians and your country, something beyond "This sucker could go down" :spray:

8. Speaking of damning with faint praise, I love this quote:
It also turned out that the proposal couldn't pass the House, because two-thirds of the president's fellow Republicans voted against it.
Asked what that said about the president's political influence,
White House spokesman Tony Fratto explained, "I think there has always been too much made of any one president's powers of persuasion on an issue."

:wtf:
