John "5 planes" McCain is a lie...
There were 5 incidents but in one he was faultless. If you are "missiled" cross deck you are innocent. In his final crash, he was in fact either heroic (going "downtown") or an air pirate bombing civilians depending on your point of view. But the aircraft was lost in combat.

More interesting were his early aircraft losses....he lost a Douglas Skyraider in the sea off Texas in 1960 and a jet he punched out of a few years later.

But in "supposed" crash number two, a funny thing happened-the plane was landed on the aircraft carrier and was repaired-got that-this was a tricycle Skyraider and landed without a problem. He hit some wires and landed just dandy.

We have aviation folk on the board, and most would identify McCain as an ass clown.

He was clueless and a poor pilot but basically lost two airplanes to dumb and had minor damage that could have killed him one other time. That's three, MAX.

1. My favorite was the "joy riding" incident in Spain - I remember when it happened
and was in the news. Embarrassing situation all around. Thought the pilots would be grounded and disciplined... but no... running for president instead

6. Suppose that's why he doesn't want to talk with Spain.

2. I think the 5 planes points to a combination of carelessness and unluckiness.
Being unlucky is nothing to sneeze at.

7. We're looking at a Ton of Asshole....
but he was merely poor as a pilot. It is a part of how he describes himself-but in fact his failure is about where the Country needs to go. It is not about anything other than failing to excel at ANYTHING...Not a shit hot pilot, nor a leader of his party...To expect John McCain to perform as a leader of what was the free world would be like expecting Paris Hilton to bring gravitas to a discussion. Both talk and neither are germane.

3. I was in Naval Aviation in the 70's
and that nickname goes back that far, I assure you.

Considering how many pilots went through entire careers with many more sorties without a SINGLE plane lost, it is appropriate.

4. There are (unproven) claims that the Forrestal incident was his fault.
A "wet start" is when jet fuel pools in the engine prior to ignition, causing a large flame to come from the engine when it's started. This can be accidental or intentional, but it was a common prank in those days to do it intentionally.

A wet start from McCain's A-4E was what started the Forrestal fire.

5. Lie is too strong a word
Ted Striker got the plane down, and wasn't at fault, but it doesn't mean he should have gone back up in the air the next day.

8. In his final crash, he was "off the reservation" making a second pass to see what he had done and
cost the US another plane...fuck him. Getting shot down is like getting shot; you're not a hero, you are a VICTIM of war.

15. My interest is in the truth.
I am NOT "correcting HIS record". My interest is that I would like us not to post untrue smears and innuendo when we have dozens of verified facts that more ably PROVE him unfit. Also I dislike things like the "He started the Forrestal fire" nonsense, when it takes less than a minute to google the video of the fire that clearly shows his plane with the tail over the water when it is struck by the missile from across the deck.

I guess I would just hate to have an uncommitted voter come here and read this type of post, and then spend 10 minutes fact checking us. Because that would not help our candidate.

12. I've worked around planes (and helicopters) off and on since 1982.
I've never heard of a pilot that had so many accidents/mishaps that wasn't cross-trained or reassigned at some point.

I suppose it happens, but...
