California Prop 8-Mormons lead the way in financing Yes
By Jennifer Garza - jgarza@sacbee.com
Published 12:00 am PDT Monday, October 13, 2008

Pam and Rick Patterson have always followed teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and tried to live within their means.

He drives a 10-year-old Honda Civic to his job at Intel. She is a stay-at home mom who makes most of the family meals and bakes her own bread. The couple, who have five sons between the ages of 3 and 12, live in a comfortable but modest three-bedroom home in Folsom.

It's a traditional lifestyle they believe is now at risk. That's why the Pattersons recently made a huge financial sacrifice – they withdrew $50,000 from their savings and donated it to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign, the ballot measure that seeks to ban same-sex marriage.

"It was a decision we made very prayerfully and carefully," said Pam Patterson, 48. "Was it an easy decision? No. But it was a clear decision, one that had so much potential to benefit our children and their children."

Mormons such as the Pattersons have emerged as the leading financial contributors to the controversial Nov. 4 ballot measure. Church members have donated about 40 percent of the $22.8 million raised to pass the initiative since July, according to Frank Schubert, campaign manager for ProtectMarriage.com, the primary backer of the "yes" campaign.

Other religious groups have contributed, including a Catholic fraternal service organization – the Knights of Columbus – which donated more than $1 million. But no group has given more than the Mormons.

In a June letter to members, top church leaders urged them to "do what you can do" to support Prop. 8. Members have answered the call.

Mormons have sponsored meetings, knocked on doors, installed lawn signs, staffed phone banks and given generously.

Their financial dominance is getting their opponents' attention and raising concerns about the role of churches in state policymaking.

"I think anyone would be troubled by any one religion exerting that kind of financial influence in a decision about what our constitution is going to say," said Kate Kendell, executive director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and a member of the executive committee of No on Prop 8.

"The amount of money the Mormon church is giving is alarming and sobering," she said. "This is a wake-up call."

Kendell said there are a number of people of faith who oppose the ban and who are working to defeat Prop. 8. "There is not one monolithic view on this, but surely this is a case where we're being massively outspent," Kendell said.

Opponents have raised about $17 million since July, according to Kendell.

She believes reports about the financial role Mormons are playing will motivate opponents of the measure. "Too many people are sitting on the sidelines," she said.

2. Why can't these nimrods get it through their heads that
someone else's life and marriage is NONE of their fucking BUSINESS? Who told them they had the power to tell others how to live?

I have yet to hear one single cogent reason how gay people marrying affects hetero marriages. Not one.

If they say 'well, it's just icky' or some other stupid, vacuous thing, then I answer 'then stop thinking about it! Why are you obsessed with gay sex?'

5. Mormons usually try to fly under the radar.
This is a major change in behavior for them. Looks like they now want to be lumped in with the fundamentalists crowd. Long term this is really bad news for the LDS church, which until recently has perferred to remain out of any controversial spotlights while they concentrate on building their flock. I say send then a little nasty-gram to remind them the whole world is watching.

7. When it fails I'm going to laugh my ass off
Nothing brings a smile to my face more than watching a group of idiot bigots waste their life savings in a failed attempt to oppress others.

I do not want my tax dollars going to fund bigotry. Argh this is really pissing me off. I wanted to give the finger to some guys holding YES ON 8 signs at a major street intersection today. :grr:

10. I hear you.
I wanted to give my neighbor the finger, but Hubby wouldn't let me. Hubby did help me put "No on 8!" signs in every window of my rather large house, though. Take that, Haters!

12. I want to put a "NO ON 8" sticker on my car but I'm afraid of it getting vandalized.
My car is too still too new to get the rear window broken or paint scratched on it because of ignorant homophobes...

14. I'm in the same boat.
Surrounded.

I did it anyway; so far, I've just gotten looks, but have not come out to find it scratched.

I'm a straight ally; my GLBT friends in this area stick to their own houses and nightclubs. They are scared to be open about their feelings. So, working out of my house, and keeping a close eye on my car, I put the signs out and the bumpersticker on.

11. I gave the finger to a family of four with young children in the car
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 03:13 PM by Downtown Hound
the other day for having a "Protect Marriage" and "Yes on 8" bumper sticker on their gas guzzling SUV. Don't really care if the parents had to sit down and explain to their children about how I was lost soul who hadn't found Jesus yet and sometimes lost souls do really Satanic things like give them the finger. I'm so fucking sick of these hypocritical bigots. The kids need to learn now what the consequences of going through life with a bigoted attitude will be. Not everybody is going to like you, and when you push others, sometimes they push back. It's the way of the world kids. Show respect, get respect. Show none, get none.

13. I agree.
I'm really pissed off that this is even on the ballot this year. I thought the Supreme Court decision would be the end of it, but the bigotry refuses to die. I'm really hoping it doesn't pass. Really. Seriously.
