How many electoral votes does your state have? I live in NC and we have 15.

1. I never thought it was fair/right
That some states have a mere 3 whereas others have 20+.

5. Actually, it's unfair in the opposite direction.
The votes of people in populous states count less.

9. Well, considering that a fair number of folks' votes don't count
regardless, it doesn't matter if it's 2 or 200.

I live in Nevada and voted Dem along with 49% of the voters (last election cycle). Our votes were counted - and tossed, since we didn't get the majority. Same thing in 2000. It doesn't feel very 'fair' to me. Never has. The Electoral College is past its sell-by date. There is no reason on earth we can't elect based on the popular vote.

10. The only reason I can think of to keep it is...
the thought of recounts in thousands of counties around the country. The way it is now, only a few states can swing it so the problems stay in those states.

(Imagine Obama winning by 1,100,000 votes and McCain contesting that! We'd never know who the President is until after January 20th.)

In 2004, 13 million people voted in California deciding 55 electoral votes.

That comes out to about 236,500 voters per EV.

Compare that to a small state like New Hampshire.

In 2004, 670 thousand people voted deciding 4 electoral votes.

That's about 167,500 voters per EV.

Let's take a look at Alaska. It has 3 EV.

In 2004, about 315,000 people voted.

That's 105,000 voters per EV.

16. exactly
but some Democrats will argue til they're blue in the face that some perceived benefit of the Electoral College outweighs this profoundly undemocratic aspect of it. It really surprises me.
