McCain: Ayers will come up in debate
John McCain said Tuesday that Barack Obama is “probably ensured” that his association with 1960s radical William Ayers will come up in Wednesday’s debate.

“I was astonished to hear him say that he was surprised that I didn’t have the guts” to bring up Ayers, McCain said on KMOX, a St. Louis radio station.

“I think he is probably ensured that it will come up this time.”

Obama has also accused McCain of trying to score “cheap political points” by bringing up Ayers.

Despite challenging Obama on the association, McCain insisted that he does not care about the “old washed-up terrorist” but said that the Illinois Democrat is not “being truthful” about the relationship.

What a dick. He'll seal his defeat the second he breathes Ayers' name and relinquishes the floor to Barack..

Hi Senator McCain. Do you see this nice shiny hook with a big fat juicy worm on the end of it? You know it looks nice don't you? You know you want a nibble.

8. Aw, nuts. Obama should do whatever he's gonna do.
He will effectively squelch this stuff, take a couple of good, fatal head shots at McNutso, and then move along, showing everybody that he can defend himself when he needs to, but he's really much more interested in providing good governance than in engaging in chickenshit slander games

10. I've got at least a dozen response scenarios
They swim around my head whenever I hear their camp raise these smears and they spike my blood pressure. Barack should shut the debate down with his answer. This should be where McCain is knocked to the floor (figuratively) and kept there.

17. That could happen.
And Obama is just the guy to do it without even making it look hard.

20. I disagree. ALL Obama has to do is point out that Ayers is funded by
the Annenbergs. Lenore Annenberg is a McCain supporter and had donated the maximum to McCain's campaign as well as many other Republicans and the RNC. If Obama is "palling around with unrepentant terrorists" then McCain and the RNC are funded by the "Unrepentant funders of an unrepentant terrorist." Period. End of story. Game over.

Getting into the G. Gordon Liddy relationship or the U.S. Council for World Freedom will just seem like Obama's playing the "he did it too" game. He needs to cut the Ayers meme off at the knees and the Annenberg connection is the way to do that.

Background info below cribbed from the dogfish's excellent DU post here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7422162

The Annenbergs-- Republicans. Bankrolled William Ayers with $50 million

But Walter and Leonore weren't just giving money to educational foundations started by William Ayers. They were also giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Republican National Committee and various other Republican groups, as well as to a whole host of Republican candidates, including the following:

George W. Bush $4000
Mitt Romney $5000
Strom Thurmond $1000
Fred Thompson $500
Rick Santorum $3000
Rick Santorum-- former Republican Senator. Received $3000 from Ayers' backers.

Why would billionaire Republican philanthropists give millions of dollars to a program that was working with William Ayers? Why would George W., Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and all those other Republicans accept money from the people who were funding this William Ayers-associated group? Why won't McCain discuss these connections between the Republican Party and Ayers?

5. Even dumber -
why tip your hand? Obama will be so ready for it.

He's really boxed himself in on this. No guts if he can't say it to his face; no brain if he does.

12. That's McCain's talking point
Telling Obama we certainly don't tell them we are going to attack....I am coming to the conclusion McCain is just not that bright...I don't even think he is as bright as Bush*...He sure doesn't demonstrate it anyway..

16. that's what I'm thinking. This attack is dirt dumb. There are numerous accounts which refute Mccain
. . on Ayers.

Never accused them of having brains though (or the folks who fall for their shit)

Obama has had an excellent way of credibly explaining away these things. Obama will put this to bed once and for all.

He's definitely a give-him-enough-rope kind of guy. And far too classy to bring up Sindy's Vicodin theiving....

14. right, he'll likely point to the connections that have influenced McCain's economics
. . .all the while, pointing to the fact that McCain's blather has nothing at all to do with the lives and fortunes of average Americans and is being used to distract from his erratic, desperate campaign.

15. I know
The point about Barack' 'not telling the truth about the relationship' is the same bizarre type of lying against all visible evidence that the Bush administration employs. I'm not privy to their tactics and thinking, but this boat looks like it's missing a few planks.

19. So why not push back with McCain's ties to Ayres through his supporters?
It worked with the "maverick" mem. He's hardly mentioned it since Biden shut it down in the VP debate.

22. I think he means it, even if he didn't say it. It is cowardly the way McCain/Palin have raised this
McCain thinks he's going to land a blow, but he's going to end up hitting himself.

23. That is EXACTLY what Obama wants - he wants to confront McCain openly - I wonder if he will really

Do it...

I bet he does simply because he can't take Obama implying him a coward. Obama will FINALLY be able to put to rest, once and for all, this lie of a story.

There is nothing McCain can win on here. Obama holds the trump card. TRUTH.

25. Obama should say if Ayres is a terrorist then you are an adulterer.
Not used to be. But you are an adulterer now. As that's the standard you apply to Ayres.
