McCain sticks up for his supporters

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 13, 2008 05:38 PM

Republican John McCain might have talked some supporters back from the edge when they said they were scared of Democratic rival Barack Obama.

But that doesn't mean he's going to apologize for the vociferousness of their support.

Asked on CNN this afternoon, about some at his rallies calling Obama a terrorist and worse, McCain said they are part of a "fringe element" and said there's similar name-calling of him at Obama rallies.

More than 99 percent of people at his events are "decent and patriotic Americans," McCain said.

1. He's like the blind Republican kittens who became Dems when they opened their eyes.
People who go to rallies are a little off center no matter which party. Yet we see on TV every speaker at McCain's Town Hall meetings are scary.

2. If the crowd were decent, they would not encourage the so-called 1% fringe
by applauding and cheering when that fringe delivers their death threats.

4. Groan. I hate word problems.
Let's see, first we have to solve for the unknown....

Damn. How 'bout I just say that the 1% at his rallies are steroid-consuming racist bullies?

Do I have to show my work?

14. Oh, my! Doesn't McSame know what his senior advisor and campaign spokesman say about these people?
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/10/10/1529529.aspx

Earlier today, Obama remarked on recent outbursts of "Traitor!" "Terrorist!" and "Kill him!" at McCain campaign events. "It's easy to rile up a crowd," Obama said. "Nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States."

In response, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace released this statement, NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports. "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising. These are the same people obama called 'bitter' and attacked for 'clinging to guns' and faith. He fails to understand that people are angry at corrupt practices in Washington and Wall Street and he fails to understand that America's working families are not 'clinging' to anything other than the sincere hope that Washington will be reformed from top to bottom."

"Attacking our supporters is a new low for the campaign that's run more millions of dollars of negative ads than any other in history."

*** UPDATE *** McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers adds in another statement: “Barack Obama’s attacks on Americans who support John McCain reveal far more about him than they do about John McCain. It is clear that Barack Obama just doesn’t understand regular people and the issues they care about. He dismisses hardworking middle class Americans as clinging to guns and religion, while at the same time attacking average Americans at McCain rallies who are angry at Washington, Wall Street and the status quo."

18. Hells Angels
Some members of the Hells Angels and other motorcycle clubs nickname themselves "one-percenters" in response to the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) claim, made after the infamous Hollister affair, that ninety-nine percent of motorcyclists were law abiding citizens, and the other 1% were outlaws giving everyone else a bad name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hells_Angels
