Tesla Says It Will Lay Off Employees and Delay Its All-Electric Sedan Until 2011

He blamed the worsening financial crisis and the credit crisis for the upheaval. “It’s not an understatement to say that nearly every business will be impacted by what has unfolded in the past weeks,” Mr. Musk wrote. The cutbacks come after warnings from Silicon Valley venture capitalists that start-ups should slash expenses and reach profitability as quickly as possible to survive the economic downturn.

Tesla, the poster child for the Valley’s push into “clean technology,” has had a particularly difficult year, with previous layoffs, executive turnover and production delays for its first car, a $109,000 all-electric roadster, as well as the Model S sedan.

1. As badly as I feel for the people laid off,
I don't see a $109K toy car for rich people with money to burn, would be all THAT ...

3. We're not talking about a $109K car.
They're talking about the followup model to their high-end sportscar, which was a luxury sedan equivalent to the BMW 5-series, and with a base price of $50k going up to $65k.

4. $50K-$65K????
for a CAR???

not gonna solve that many problems either..

They need to bring back the cars that they smashed up all those years ago.. those were AFFORDABLE to the masses..and had they not ditched the project, by NOW they would have been even MORE affordable..

5. Yeah, let's completely trash and throw away anything that's not perfect.
Because, you know, progress comes all at once, just out of thin air, not out of that "gradual improvement" crap. :eyes:

"They need to bring back the cars that they smashed up all those years ago.. those were AFFORDABLE to the masses"

No, they weren't. They cost $85,000 to make, and they were only leased at the price they were because of California regulations limiting their suggested retail value.

2. F--k! I really wanted one of those things. I mean REALLY.
Granted I can't afford it, but I still wanted it to be on the market.
