George Orwell's 1984 written in 1948
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 02:50 PM by seemslikeadream
Orwell was off by a few years. Would anyone have a suggestion of a book written in the last 20 years that will be proven to be as prophetic as 1984?

http://www.george-orwell.org/1984/index.html

If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles.

If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet-!

The Chestnut Tree was almost empty.

Animal Farm was also a masterpiece...

Brilliant! I didn't read it until 2004. Waiting just made it that much more remarkable and easier to appreciate.

8. The Shell Game?
Almost every detail preceding the October surprise has come true, even the GOP's choice of a woman for VP. In the story, the Republicans are trailing badly, and that's when the neocons decide to allow their October surprise to happen -- an attack that President Bush actually seeded last Spring when he said, "the next 9/11 will make the last 9/11 pale in comparison.

14. I watched the movie version earlier this week
Richard Burton and William Hurt, two of the best actors who ever lived.

I have read the book several times, the first at age 10. It seems more prophetic every time.

17. I was in High School in 1984
All the news talking heads chuckled and joked about how Orwell had been wrong.
I looked around at Reagan's america and I would say " No he was pretty much right on except Americas prolls substituted our ration of vodka for beer."
Everything else was pretty accurate.

Boy, things sure have gotten better since then.

18. He wasn't off -- he intentionally shifted the 4 and the 8.
He was saying that 1984 was already in place in 1948. His intent wasn't to prophesize, rather to reveal.

20. Not in the last 20 years, my Friend.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was first published in 1962.

It doesn't apply to the U.S.S.R. anymore.
