Job #2 for Obama(after dealing with economy) repeal HAVA? |
|
I posted something similar yesterday, but it got buried, so I'm re-posting:
We need a new national law, at least for federal races, which is very simple: all paper or absentee and all hand counted unless the paper scanner is not proprietary. Lots of you are way more up to speed than the rest if us. Your thoughts? Is Obama willing to lead on this? This quadrennial voting nightmare needs to end once and for all.

of people in the United States Congress that are willing to allow people to vote, it should be no problem. Apparently that is not the case. Their cure for our broken election systems is worse than the disease.

2. I'm not sure it is Obama's job, but yes. |

The vote needs to be managed publicly, openly, and verifiably. We absolutely MUST NOT allow the vote to be handled by proprietary software by private entities.
I think it is critical that Congress passes election reform with the highest priority, and I'm sure Obama will sign it into law.

3. Paper trail with guaranteed chain of custody. Nothing less. |

I don't know that it is necessary to say that everything much be hand counted. Everything must be AVAILABLE for hand counting if a challenge is necessary. In 99.5% oc the cases, the results are not controversial.
But I certainly agree it is job #2. Any Democrat who doesn't see the problem now has no business being in public office

Although I care who wins, I want to know that the process is conducted fairly. To me, voting is a sacred right and anybody who screws with that Dem or GOP needs to be put in jail.

5. Until members of both parties stop redistricting to their benefit as soon as they get elected.... |

It won't matter. I live in a district in NC that runs along I-40 from Durham to East Raleigh. It is perfect for Brad Miller to keep his seat as long as he wants. Now I like him, so I'm not complaining. But as long as this is allowed to happen, and congress folks aren't in contested races every time they go to the polls, they won't do anything at all about it.
