I've seen more than a few shiners in my line of work, and I'm thinking that she's faking it with makeup and/or the photo has been photoshopped. If this photo was taken shortly after the attack, she should have much more swelling to that eye to the point where it would almost be shut (if not entirely). I fail to see ANY swelling (edema) to her face, anywhere - her eyelid at least should be puffy. Also, a fresh bruise is purple/red because of the increased bloodflow to the area in the immediate aftermath of trauma - Ms. Todd's "bruises" are greyish in color. (Never seen a grey bruise, either..) There are no abrasions to her face (except for the "B")either. Notice too how "white" the white part of her eyeball is - with a direct trauma, especially one forceful enough to cause a loss of consciousness - there would be broken blood vessels in the eye, causing her eyeball to look blood red. And as for the "B" - if that cut were made in an attack, it wouldn't be so "perfect" - the cut would be deeper, and the cut itself would be more jagged in appearance. Imagine trying to carve a letter into someone's face who was trying to fight back? It would look bad, and the victim would probably have other cuts to the facial area due to "misses" with the knife. I see no other cuts/scratches to her face. Also, I doubt that the attacker took his time carving a perfect (albeit backwards) "B" on her cheek, because that's a perfectly shaped, superficial surface scratch - not a cut from an attacker's knife.
Why did she refuse ER treatment after such a "vicious" attack? An attack where she was knocked unconscious and cut with a knife? Because there WASN'T an attack, and that would've been totally obvious to ER staff the minute they assessed her "injuries".
JMHO..
