Never Mind the Surge: Iraqis Still Leaving the Country in Droves

Posted by , Gulf News at 11:35 AM on October 25, 2008.

The number of Iraqis willing to leave their country for a safer haven is reflective of a state of desperation.

Beyond the number count, there are many indicators to the state of affairs in Iraq. The number of Iraqis willing to leave their country for a safer haven is reflective of a state of desperation and disappointment as far as conditions in their country are concerned.

According to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), many Iraqis are leaving as a result of violence and the endless cycle of bloodshed. During the first six months of this year, no less than 9,500 requests have been submitted, with Sweden being the main destination for many asylum seekers.

The number may well be considered relatively small. But one has to take into account the bigger picture as the UN estimates that the number of displaced Iraqis inside Iraq is no less than two million. In addition, an equal number are residing in neighboring countries.

When looking at the overall situation the picture is grim. But the people can not be blamed for the lack of peace and stability in their country. And until conditions return to normal, the number count of refugees and asylum seekers will remain at the high end.

1. Mayada?
Has anyone read the book Mayada? It is an amazing book and totally a true story about the state of Iraq. Yes it is told before Saddam was captured, but it gives you a picture of the bleakness of Iraq under Saddam and the beauty of Iraq before Saddam's regine.

and repopulate it with Americans. That way they would have an American state in the middle of the Middle East. This was in several articles I read some months ago, but do not know where they were. Edited to add: Here is one of them and upon rereading it, it is probably a tin foil hat type of article, but I don't know. Link:

By the way, the hero of mccain and bush is Teddy Roosevelt and this was at one time Teddy's plan for a country he invaded. My memory is going, so I will google it and see what I can find.

4. The ethnic cleansing is almost complete...
The few Sunnis that stay behind in the Shia neighborhoods are no threats to the majority Shia and vice versa. The entire country has been successfully cleansed. The services of the United States are no longer needed. Thank you very much.
