The number of Iraqis willing to leave their country for a safer haven is reflective of a state of desperation.Beyond the number count, there are many indicators to the state of affairs in Iraq. The number of Iraqis willing to leave their country for a safer haven is reflective of a state of desperation and disappointment as far as conditions in their country are concerned.
According to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), many Iraqis are leaving as a result of violence and the endless cycle of bloodshed. During the first six months of this year, no less than 9,500 requests have been submitted, with Sweden being the main destination for many asylum seekers.
The number may well be considered relatively small. But one has to take into account the bigger picture as the UN estimates that the number of displaced Iraqis inside Iraq is no less than two million. In addition, an equal number are residing in neighboring countries.
When looking at the overall situation the picture is grim. But the people can not be blamed for the lack of peace and stability in their country. And until conditions return to normal, the number count of refugees and asylum seekers will remain at the high end.
