Republican fears of historic Obama landslide unleash civil war for the future of the party

Republican fears of historic Obama landslide unleash civil war for the future of the party

Senior Republicans believe that John McCain is doomed to a landslide defeat which will hand Barack Obama more political power than any president in a generation.

By Tim Shipman in Durango, Colorado
Last Updated: 12:37AM BST 26 Oct 2008

Aides to George W.Bush, former Reagan White House staff and friends of John McCain have all told The Sunday Telegraph that they not only expect to lose on November 4, but also believe that Mr Obama is poised to win a crushing mandate.

They believe he will be powerful enough to remake the American political landscape with even more ease than Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

The prospect of an electoral rout has unleashed a bitter bout of recriminations both within the McCain campaign and the wider conservative movement, over who is to blame and what should be done to salvage the party's future.

<snip>

A former White House official who still advises President Bush told The Sunday Telegraph: "McCain hasn't won independents, nor has he inspired the base. It's the worst of all worlds. He is dragging everyone else down with him. He needs to deploy people and money to salvage what we can in Congress."

The prospect of defeat has unleashed what insiders describe as an "every man for himself" culture within the McCain campaign, with aides in a "circular firing squad" as blame is assigned.

<snip>

Jim Nuzzo, a White House aide to the first President Bush, dismissed Mrs Palin's critics as "cocktail party conservatives" who "give aid and comfort to the enemy".
He told The Sunday Telegraph: "There's going to be a bloodbath. A lot of people are going to be excommunicated. David Brooks and David Frum and Peggy Noonan are dead people in the Republican Party. The litmus test will be: where did you stand on Palin?"

:rofl: Great litmus test... read article to see what he thinks of her. :rofl:

1. The religious extremists want to grab control!
The far right extreme fringe sees this as their moment to grab control of the Republican party.

Imagine Palin as the new head of the entire Republican party.

It's a dream come true for Democrats if it came to pass.

Maybe the complete and total destruction of the Republican Party at the hands of the religiously intolerant and insane is all God's plan.

It's kinda like having a front row seat of Martin Luther hammering his Theses to the cathedral door.

Let the splintering begin!

16. Good Luck
They've had control, and the American public are finally beginning to see it for what it is. It's not pretty, in fact it's the most disgusting piece of shit that's been witnessed in modern politics. The Internet has brought all of this to the forefront. Republicanism as we know it is dead. Good riddance.

21. I agree the far right has had some control, but...
It seems like they want to hand off to the far far right extremists - the ones who make the Bush admin look moderate. I never thought we'd see people to the right of Bush on a presidential ticket, especially after what a disaster the Bush presidency has been - and then Palin shows up.

You know what they say about being in a hole and digging faster!

Is it someday you'll end up in Communist China and really live in a communist country? I really can't think of the saying. Sorry McCain, you are a pathetic piece of shit. Cowardly fuck.

I just meant the saying "When you are in a hole, stop digging." But in the case of the Republicans, they apparently feel the best way out of this hole is to dig faster. :rofl:

14. Eh, I disagree. I wish the wackos would take over the party.
They are laughable but somewhat harmless. The massive economic problems we are now facing are the fault of the other wing of the party. Those good old "fiscal conservatives" who will presumably live on to rebuild the party in a newer, hipper libertarian image and continue to screw over the entire world for centuries to come.

The wackos are far from harmless. Economic Problems=Fiscal Conservatives, Unprovoked war costing a trillion dollars and 4000 Americans lives, not to mention HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Innocent Iraqi lives. That was the "Wacko" Wing of the Republican party who we can never allow to run this country again.

5. I especially like these snippets....
<snip>

In North Carolina, where Senator Elizabeth Dole seems set to loose, Republicans are running adverts that appear to take an Obama victory for granted, warning that the Democrat will have a "blank cheque" if her rival Kay Hagen wins. "These liberals want complete control of government in a time of crisis," the narrator says. "All branches of Government. No checks and balances."

<snip>

A private memo on the likely result of the congressional elections, leaked to Politico, has the Republicans losing 37 seats.

Ed Rollins, who masterminded Ronald Reagan's second victory in 1984, said the election is already over and predicted: "This is going to turn into a landslide."

<snip>

He said: "Win or lose, there is a ready made conservative candidate waiting in the wings. Sarah Palin is not the new Iain Duncan Smith, she is the new Ronald Reagan." On the accuracy of that judgment, perhaps, rests the future of the Republican Party.

And who eliminated those checks & balances? They took the Constitution & wiped their asses with it. They put more power in the executive than there has ever been & now they are worried that all that power will lie in the hands of a Democrat.

What in GOD'S NAME are these people smoking??? Do they not realize that McCain was a serious threat to Obama until he picked that moose-killing lunatic as his running mate?? It took the American public a grand total of 17 DAYS to realize what a revolting dolt Palin is. And these fools think she's the "Future of the Republican Party??" :wtf: :crazy: :wtf: :crazy:

Oh, and also:

"Neconservative writer Charles Krauthammer condemned "the rush of wet-fingered conservatives leaping to Barack Obama","

Why are their fingers wet?? Is this some weird new neo-con expression??

29. There will be huge schizm,
The Republican party might break into three parts:

The northeastern and rust belt fiscal conservatives (like Olympia Snowe)
The southern and mid south social conservatives (like Lindsay Graham)
The farm belt and western libertarian Goldwater wing (like Ron Paul)

Anyway you look at it, the Republicans are about to get an enema. I have never seen the Republican Party as ripe for division and self-destruction before. It's usually the Democrats, hence the saying "if there are five Democrats in a room, you have twelve ideas."

Let's grab the popcorn and watch the rats eat other!

31. I Saw This Coming In 2004...The Knives Are Out...
I need to go fishing back for some of my posts following Kerry's defeat....everyone saw nothing but gloom, but I tried to take a step back and saw more problems for the GOOP than the Democrats. We had hit bottom and with the emergence of the netroots and Dr. Dean taking over the DNC, I felt things were gonna change...but it took the repugnicans to over-reach and get consumed by their own greed and arrogance. The coalition Rove had stitched together to give power to his bosses was bound only by their own need for power and money and soon those interests began to conflict...and then the structure began to crumble.

The first shot was Terri Schaivo...the fundies felt they were due and when boooshie didn't bring Ms. Schaivo's dying body onto the Senate floor for Bill Frist to bring back to life, the fundies thought they had been taken advantage of. Next was Katrina where the world saw how corrupt the boooosh regime had become...many moderates and fiscal conservatives started to have reservations...then the "surge"...and the Iraq fiasco...this drove a wedge between the neo-cons and the rest...the groups that made up the main blocks of the party were starting to blow apart.

We saw a good example of how far things had drifted during the GOOP primaries. Each faction had their favorite and none had enough to push their candidate over the top...only Gramps who played the "middle" was left standing...and then barely. His support has always been a mile wide and a milimeter thick. He tried to bring the factions back together...but every time he went out of his way to pander to one group, he further alienated another. While the breaking apart of the GOOP wasn't caused by Gramps, he's sure gonna be blamed for it.

The problem the GOOP will have...and its already apparent, is that the loudest voices will be the ones who are heard and will pull the party further to the right...using the "real conservative" mantra as a litmus test. Moderates will be pushed aside as will anyone associated with boooosh...the hate radio crowd will over-run the place and lead the party to further ruin.

34. Palin Is The "Topinka" Victim
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 06:47 AM by ProfessorGAC
For those who know about Illinois, Judy Barr-Topinka, a Repub mover and shaker in IL, was the one who brought in Alan Keyes to run against Obama.

He, as you probably remember, got slaughtered in the election. (Greater than 2 to 1.)

There was much speculation in Illinois that Barr-Topinka did this to temporarily appease the radical right, and then after the bloodbath, told them "I told you so! Now go in the corder, sit down and shut up."

I've got a feeling that this is what the real power brokers of the RNC are doing. They served up McCain and then pushed the ninny Palin on him so they've get killed and the radical right would be marginalized. Then they could get back to being the kind of Repubs (Goldwater, Rockefeller, et al) that they used to be.

Palin is their sacrificial lamb, because in the long run, she doesn't matter anyway. And anyone who thinks she's a frontrunner for 2012 is a dolt.
The Professor
