6. November 2
Cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is announcing today that not only will he retire his weekly strip "Opus" on Nov. 2 -- right before the election -- but that he himself is also walking away from his 30-year career in cartooning.

His trunk packed, Opus says a sweet-eyed goodbye. (Copyright 2008 Berkeley Breathed. Dist. by The Washington Post Writers Group)

"With the crisis in Wall Street and Washington, I'm suspending my comic strip to assist the nation," said Breathed, 51, satirizing politics even in his news release from Washington Post Writers Group. He added: "I call on John McCain to join me."

9. yep

Cotton was consistently a misogynistic, violent, abusive and intolerant character. He talked down to women, berated his son, was prone to violent outbursts, and on more than one occasion has exhibited homicidal tendencies. His abrasive, misogynistic manner was consistently embarrassing for Hank and usually infuriating for Hank’s wife, Peggy. Throughout his history on the series, Cotton never once addressed Peggy by name, but he instead called her "Hank’s wife," including on the very rare occasion he's trying to be nice to her. He even passed on some of his sexist and misogynistic traits to Bobby at one point, teaching him that women should be made to cook and clean for their husbands all day long.

"Hello, Barrack. Hello Barrack's wife."

13. That is a very sad strip....and I am going to be so sad when Opus is gone.
I feel like I am losing a friend...
When "Bloom County" ended and when "Calvin and Hobbes" disappeared....it was depressing.

It is weird to think that one can sort of feel like one knows these characters...
