To all who are now wringing their hands about "one party rule" |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 08:18 AM by frogcycle
Two things:
First, the so-called republican party self-destructed. It abdicated every responsibility to defend and enforce the Constitution. It has an avowed intent, and a forty-year record of performance toward the goal, of dismantling the US Government and turning rule over to an oligarchy of multinational corporations.
Second, the Democratic Party is diverse. It includes a broad spectrum of opinions. It includes some ultra-rich folks, pro-lifers, soccer moms, Nascar dads, many of the demographics the right wing likes to call its "base." (what an appropriate adjective for many of the members' attitudes!). The Democratic Party includes people who value diverse opinion as well as diverse ethnic and cultural background.
Given that the two-party system has been destroyed by the complete and utter abandonment by one of the parties of anything vaguely resembling American values, it is too late to bemoan the specter of "one-party rule." That is a given. What you need to do is what Joe Biden's dad always told him: "Get up." You've been knocked down by the gang of scoundrels who took over your party. Admit it; throw them back in the sewer they crawled out of, and organize a new party that represents a rational alternative point of view without the extremist anti-American drumbeat. Then eventually you may be able to field some viable candidates and regain a voice (I recommend picking a new name; the old one is forever tainted).
We The People are about to be back in control, and it is high time. When you learn to participate as civilized members of a democratic society, you'll have a voice. Until you have done that, though, shut up.

1. One Party Democratic Rule = Social Security, Medicare... |
|
Large Democratic majorities have been responsible for some of the most important and constructive legislation of the past century. The New Deal turned a repugnican depression into a post-war boom that lasted for over 30 years. The 60's Democratic majorities brought about Civil Rights and Medicare...and then there was the brief Democratic control in '93-'94 that did a very hard thing...it reversed the Raygun era defecits with a tax hike that led to the prosperity that followed for the remainder of the decade.
Not all has been great, but the record of Democratic achievements shoot down the right wing bullshit about the fears of a "librul/socialist" takeover of the government. The fact has been proven...repugnicans can't govern...and given complete power, they abuse it.

2. GOPers didn't mind it when they've had it during Chimpy's administration |
|
When GWB first came to office, Hastert and Lott ran the House and Senate. And there was one-party GOP rule a couple of years later when Frist took over the Senate from Daschle (who was Maj. Leader for only a year-and-a-half). Frist and Hastert had both houses of Congress right up until Reid and Pelosi took over in Jan 2007.
And don't forget that the GOP has had the majority in the Supreme Court for much of GWB's presidency, as well. So there was one-party rule of all three branches of Government.
