Got into a discussion on past associations with my Catholic friends yesterday.
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 08:57 AM by bulloney
They were parroting the Repub talking point that it's important that we know about William Ayers and Obama's connections with him because we may find that both of them still have some tendencies that would harm this country.

I responded, "You mean like Pope Benedict and the Hitler Youth?"

I need to remember to wear protective clothing when engaging in such discussions. Exploding heads are very messy. They can't process this type of information in their Black-and-White, Right-and-Wrong, No-Shades-of-Gray world.

6. That is hilarious!
You could have gone on to say that the Pope had a stronger connection to the Nazis than Obama had to the Weather Underground.

7. Heh Heh
I have a few Catholic friends who finally quit the church over the 'Nazi Pope'. One couple has even refused to have their sons baptized in the church. It was a HUGE thing for them to do that.

9. I think the point's over there ------->
See, some folks are trying to say that because Barack Obama and William Ayers worked together once upon a time, some 30 years or more after Ayers' activities in the Weather Underground, that that means that Obama is a bomb-throwing radical bent on dynamiting the Pentagon. Pointing out to a conservative Catholic the current Pope's far closer affinities with Hitler and the Nazi Youth movement is a way of rhetorically pointing out to them that the scurrilous stovepiping they're engaging in can cut both ways.

See?

10. Nothing like offending ALL Catholics because your friends happen to be Repubs
Obama is winning the Catholic vote.

There political views have nothing to do with being Catholic.

I'm Catholic and I'm voting for Obama.

I'm Catholic and I think this post sucks and serves no purpose but to offend.

11. OP's not talking about you or about "all Catholics".
He's talking about Catholics that are voting *against* Obama because (they *claim* that) the youthful indiscretions of a *third* party , with whom Obama had a perfunctory relationship , reflect negatively on Obama.

Meanwhile, they excuse, or simply refuse to recognize a much more glaring youthful indiscretion committed by the leader of their church.

Why you believe "all Catholics" would be offended by this is a mystery. Since it obviously targets a particular subset of Catholics of which you ( and many other Catholics) are not a member.
