Mullah Dobson explains why the presidential election isn't nearly as important as Proposition 8:

We've picked bad presidents before, and we've survived as a nation. But we will not survive if we lose the institution of marriage.

Got that? Gutting the Constitution, breaking the military, crashing the economy, and making the world hate us, no biggie. But letting gays get married, that's the end of the world. And not in a cool End Times, Rapture, Hello-again-Mr.-Jesus kind of way either.

Better yet, as emptywheel pointed out to me, Prop 8 won't just stop gays from getting married in California, it'll nullify all existing gay marriages. Because nothing will preserve the sacred institution of marriage like suddenly dissolving a whole bunch of 'em.

1. Stupid stupid man and his stupid stupid logic
Allowing more people to marry does not equal a loss of the institution of marriage. If anything, it's an expansion of the institution of marriage.

5. His "Focus On The Family" group of crackpots sponsored that No On 8 ad.
You know the one where the concerned parents hated the fact that their son brought up that in MA they were teaching about gay marriage in school?

Can they lose their tax exempt status for this?

7. This is the reason I turned against the repubs, dictating my morals
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 02:40 PM by lyonn
The repubs want to dictate our "rights". Gay marriage? Truly I don't care what they call it but I feel strongly that people should have the same rights and protection to conduct their lives, health care, children, homes, etc. whether same sex or not.

The repubs want to dictate whether we have an abortion, or whether a woman can have her tubes tied, in my day you could only have this done for the health of the woman, yet they don't believe in health care for the citizens enough to control the run away spending in the health industry. I spent 3 days in the hospital last winter, flu complications, and it cost #18,000. Medicare paid for most of it. If the repubs had anything to do with it that would not have been paid by the govt. That is a ridiculous amount of money for my condition and that needs to be fixed. Stories are all over the place about the cost of medical care and how it ruins lives.

The repubs want to ridicule and diminish people that are agnostic/athiest. A few years ago my husband and I had a disagreement about whether I was athiest or agnotic. He said as long as I had no scientific proof that a god didn't exist then I was agnostic. True, if there was proof that a god existed then I could change my status so now I call myself agnostic. If some voice came to me and declared it was a superior being I would figure I'd lost it totally, but hey, whatever, now some scientific proof is possible maybe. Society makes us use special terminology to satisfy the masses. My sympathies go out to those that want a marriage rather than a civil union, but, maybe just getting our "rights" by whatever name should work too?!

Politicians or their spokesperson should not bring moral values into the discussion.

Edit: Ok, what I am trying to say is what most of us expect from our govt., that is to allow us, that don't fall into the mainstream group, to maintain our dignity and not be ridiculed.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- The defeat next month of the state proposition that seeks to prohibit same sex marriages could mean hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars in personal, business and government revenue from same-sex weddings over the next three years in Sonoma County, according to a study released today.

http://watchingamerica.com/News/1425/california-benefits-from-legalizing-gay-marriage/

June 16th, 2008 has to become a historic day for the State of California. The local Supreme Court ruled gay marriage legal in California last month, and couples of the same sex are able to register for legal marriage by recognition from the California government at 17:01 on June 16th.

Before, in the United States, only Massachusetts legally allowed gay marriage, and it only referred to its state residents. However, California is welcoming gay partners from all over the States to come and register. Thousands of homosexual couples are expected to swarm into California and get married. At the same time, an influx of large number of business opportunities is also expected to bring a strong local economic boost.

Gay and lesbian couples are sure to be ecstatic on their wedding days, but the ones shedding the most tears of happiness may be California's wedding and honeymoon vendors. Will a change in law mean a bull market for big fat gay weddings? The Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law thinks so. The think tank released a study June 9 showing California's $6 billion-a-year wedding industry will get an infusion of $683 million over three years in direct spending by same-sex couples.

Forget economic stimulus checks. Same-sex marriages might give California just the financial boost it needs.

Wedding planners, bakers and hotel representatives say they began booking more business almost immediately after the state Supreme Court's decision in May overturning a ban on gay marriage. Noting years of pent-up demand, a University of California, Los Angeles study projects that same-sex unions could provide a $370 million shot in the arm to the state economy. Barring further legal intervention, gay couples will be able to start marrying at 5:01 p.m. Monday, when the Supreme Court's decision becomes final.

"Honey, I'm'a fixin' to go Save Our Marriage!"

"How are you going to do that? Are you going to quit beating me, cheating on me, and molesting the children?"

"Of course not, you dumb bitch. I'm going to go vote for Proposition 8!"
