Obama bad for Canada: Celluci
Source: Windsor Star

OTTAWA -- A Barack Obama presidency would present a "danger" to Canada because he could renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, imperiling the future economic integration of the continent, former U.S. ambassador to Canada Paul Cellucci said Monday.

Cellucci, a Republican, engaged in an overt piece of partisan politicking on Canadian soil eight days before the U.S. presidential election, telling an audience in Ottawa the Democratic senator would face "pressure" to renegotiate NAFTA after indicating a willingness to do so during the hotly contested Ohio primary.

"The reason I say it's a little bit of a danger for Canada is because if the polls are right -- and I hope that they're not -- but if they're right, we could have Barack Obama as president of the United States with over, maybe 60 United States senators in the Democratic column and a pretty strong majority in the House of Representatives.

"You're going to have basically one-party government in the United States," Cellucci said in the keynote address to the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute annual meeting.

You tell 'em, Paul. Better yet, why don't you fold it until it's all corners and stick it?

We Canucks tend to make up our own minds, and this one think that renegotiating NAFTA sound like and exceptionally fine idea!

2. I think 88% of Canadians would disagree.
And that probably includes a plurality of Conservative voters.

4. hmm, a renegotiation with the country who has the
second largest oil deposits in the world? with unlimited clean water?
I don't think Mr.Obama would take Canada lightly, he's a very intelligent man who seems to be for fair trade not free trade, i think Canadian and American citizens are both for that.

It was OK when it was the Republicans, though.

6. Fuck off Celluci. I'm tired of your patronizing attitude.
Canadians not only overwhelmingly want Obama to win the Presidential election, they'd choose him for Prime Minister if he'd take the job.

9. COMPLETELY AGREE

Him and that miscreant who proceeded him were the worst representatives imaginable. In sending them to Ottawa, Bushco showed utter contempt for Canada. Obama is overwhelmingly supported here, as in the rest of the world. Paul C can kiss my lilly white Cannuck ass!

14. Hee. But tell us how you really feel?
At this point I have to be a little amused at the fact that an ambassador gets this kind of reception from his host country.

I don't remember much about Griffin, since I was still finding my political legs at the time and wasn't deeply aware of Can-Am relations. My inner jury's still out on Wilkins, but the fact that he doesn't drive me to a frothing rage every time he opens his mouth like Celucci did is probably a good sign.

19. Our brother and sister-in-law in Alberta do...
And they don't pay attention to politics at ALL. They just know that if McCain steals this election, we'll be living in their basement outside Edmonton until I can get a work permit.

8. And Bushonomics has been just great for Canada

Last I saw, the loony wasn't looking too well (from a Canadian perspective). Makes one wonder about how that's going to affect banks and businesses holding obligations in the states that were priced at or around parity.

Then again, it's not all bad news for exporters.

17. We detested Cellucci when he was ambassador.
Arrogant, loudmouthed patronizing asshole. Everything Canadians dislike about America, he exemplified--and nothing that we like. Amazingly enough, the guy after him was even worse!

Of course, you're still stuck with Howie Mandel... :hide:
