Just said to my conservative fundy asshole co-worker... |
|
He was all smug when I wore my Obama Shirt to work this morning. And said to me, "You know, my vote cancels your's out!" Here was my reply:
Yes, indeed it does. However, I have spent countless evenings and weekend registering NEW voters who will vote, or already have voted, for Obama. I have personally driven 23 individuals to early voting sites. I have called to remind countless voters to send in absentee ballots. While you spend every afternoon in this factory listening to Rush or Hannity on your personal radio, I think about my evening of working for the campaign. And while your home watching whatever it is you watch on TV this evening, I'll be working my ass off to make sure that YOUR vote is canceled out as many times as possible.
Yes my vote is canceled out, but I seriously doubt you can cancel every vote I've worked my ass off to secure for the next President of the United States.

52. There have been a number of rants in here lately that were nasty |
|
and counter-productive. This one was EXACTLY the way to do it. The OP didn't have to resort to cursing and histrionics and conveyed his message perfectly. People should take note of this tact. I have discovered that when you start screaming at someone - you lose. This OP spoke in a manner that left no room for a retort. Perfect.

That's the beauty of the Rush and Hannity et al sheep types. They're so taken in by the hogwash being spewed forth that it's impossible for them to be pulled away from the drivel even for a few minutes, and aside from their own vote they do nothing for their cause. I would refer to them as being politically self-limited.

The whole cancelled vote thing... by that logic no one should vote. Of course when fewer people vote, the GOP tends to win, right, so discouraging voters is a great boon to them.
Everyone should stand up to someone like that! Well done!

I've heard conservatives use this 'cancel your vote out' crap before. That's not how our system is supposed to work. No one's vote gets canceled. All votes are counted or are supposed to be counted. Why do you think so many of them think like this?

90. Posts like these have become really disheartening to me. |
|
These conversations do actually take place. I've heard, live and in person, some incredible rebuttals. In my own case, I've rehearsed "elevator speech" responses in my head to the recurring crap so often that when I end up on the receiving end of it one too many times, the response comes pouring out of me in a way that wouldn't ordinarily happen.
1) I have no doubt that there are umpteen thousands of people out there who have done the exact same thing. I am not surprised we are seeing so many stories such as this so close to the election. Many of us have probably bottled up responses for so long they're second nature to our brains and finally get some release on our tongues.
2) When recapping a conversation on an internet forum, it is highly unlikely the exact verbage will be recorded with faithful detail. We're likely to receive the gist of it as the person recalls what happened. We aren't privy to pauses, stumbling or other items that are part and parcel of realistic speech patterns.
3) One of my husband's co-workers called me the other day howling. (This company is split about 70-30 conservative to liberal, so the liberals usually don't engage in political discourse unless it is amongst themselves). My husband is politically aware, but not to the extent I am. With the heightened interest in this election discussions have spilled over into mixed groups. This co-worker, who knows me as a progressive, called me because he knew I would find it hilarious. Can't for the life of me remember what was said, but my husband apparently issued a very funny and very biting smack down to one of his Republican co-workers who made the mistake of saying something patently stupid. Never ever would have suspected my husband would ever do something like that. He is just not politically controversial and outspoken, but this time he just felt he had to say something.
Who knows. The plural of anecdote is not data, so maybe this guy did make it up out of whole cloth. However, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt rather than blatantly call him a liar and demand to hear the real truth. I am also really sorry you haven't witnessed such conversations. They really are true gems and a joy to behold.

So, say you ain't a patriot, and you're fixin' to vote up a candidate what's some limpo what'll give in to the crybaby liberals, the damn screechin' women, the commies at the United Nations, and the other America-haters. Fine by me! I got a vote here that does just as much good as yours, and mine's marked "No Limpos!"
Or say you wanna take away the money we need for our Army tanks and rifles and fightin' planes what let us keep our eternal vigilance of freedom by invadin' other countries. And say you want to give it to the damn schoolteachers, which let me tell you never done old Duane any damn good, and still, they most times drive a newer car than I do. I learned all I got from my daddy—another guy without any fancy book smarts, by the way. If he didn't need them books, then why do anybody else? Well, hey, I might not be educated, but I do got me a big ol' flag, $300 from the government, and a president that, like I told you before, kicked him some ass. It's things like that what make me happy my vote gonna meet y'all's toe-to-toe and take it down!

I wonder how Sarah Palin will redecorate the White House when we send her there.
I replied: The only place will be sending her is back to Alaska where she can resume her duty as Ho from Wasilla!

89. Excellent rebuttal! My relatives use that cancelled out meme, but gang up on me with it.... |
|
There are like 14 or 16 registered Republicans in my family and all arch conservative Christians. They love to point out that their block of votes will more than cancel out the 5 of us in the family who vote Democrat. I got fed up with it a couple of weeks ago and finally snapped, "True enough, so it's a good thing for all of us the Democrats in this family are politically motivated volunteers and most of the voters in this country aren't in our family!"
You rock!

Vote early, vote often.
"Vote often" by getting a lot of other people to vote your way . . .

94. Awesome job! Nothing chaps my ass more than someone saying "My vote cancels yours" |
|
I hate that meme. No vote is canceled if it is cast. Sure, in mathematical terms you could make that argument, but voting is a sacred honor and I'll be damned if my vote is "canceled". My vote still stands.

Wish I had the same gusto. I had a supervisor and we'd always get into debates. But they were fun debates. Notoriously fun debates that everyone at work knew about. Had another Supervisor joke to him.. get ready for the soup line. Shoulda taken that seriously. Since our department was eliminated Oct 20th. Sign of the times. Now this guy who was concerned about Obama taking his taxes is out of a job just like me. Probably still delusional somehow and blame it on Obama. But I haven't seen anybody from work since the 20th :( I rarely see many of them anyway unless it was 4am in the morning.

That is what democracy is all about. Of course when the Rethuglicans attempt to block voters who think they will vote against them, that is somewhat like a dictatorship. Close to what he have currently.
The 'Cancels your's out' philosphy shows the small minded thinking of your co-worker. Voting is not cancelling out, it is voting in. Voting in a person who we collectively think is good for America.
Thanks for your exceptional effort in making the change we need happen.

kernelfarmer said...... He was all smug when I wore my Obama Shirt to work this morning. And said to me, "You know, my vote cancels your's out!" Here was my reply: You know I guess we have to learn to be a pushy at the repukes are. You got and good start, a very smart thing to say. It for sure gave him something to think about. Thank you so much for you service to our country. At this defining moment you couldn't be doing anything better than working to get Obama elected. Yelowdogdemocrat2

I have registered voters since June. Hundreds of them, as an official Wisconsin Special Registration Deputy. All vounteer time, on my part. No associations with any group.
As an Ward Chairman, I have also registered well over 1,000 additional voters, as a City Deputy. New and address changers, absentee ballot applications, in 6 weeks. Not one registration was rejected, or missing information. I'm batting 1000.
I suspect I have almost 1,600 of these registered voters out there. They all left knowing how to early vote by absentee, where they voted and the number of their city clerks to early vote with.
I had four Republicans who I registered. Only four people told me they were Republcians.
I never ask. They volunteer that information, but I make sure they know ther voting rights, and the election process.
