Chambliss: The rush of African-Americans to the polls has ‘got our side energized.’»

Wednesday, the chairman of the Hillsborough County, Florida Republican party forwarded an e-mail to several hundred party members that warned of “‘the threat’ of ‘carloads of black Obama supporters coming from the inner city to cast their votes.’” While the McCain campaign condemned the email, the sentiment does not appear to be isolated. As Tapped notes, earlier this week, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) proclaimed that the the “rush” of African-Americans to the polls has “got our side energized“:

“There has always been a rush to the polls by African-Americans early,” he said at the square in Covington, a quick stop on a bus tour as the campaign entered its final week. He predicted the crowds of early voters would motivate Republicans to turn out. “It has also got our side energized, they see what is happening,” he said.

Similarly, Chambliss has been warning his “predominantly white base” in North Georgia, “The other folks are voting.”

Ooops, that's right. I came to Tennessee. We've had our share of afflictions, too, though we haven't had quite the crop of bozos that Georgia has produced.

14. Oh, Saxby. Got rid of the pointy hat and funny robes for a business suit and an RNC card?
Of course he did. No question about it. Virtually all the men who were in the KKK or who would be in it today if the 60s had not happened have all joined the Bushies and nonviolently execute their mission, same as it was when they wore the pointy hats and funny robes.

are as American as we all are, have as much of a right to vote as anyone else, and why make the distinction to begin with? Yea, it was blatant.

22. But he's pretty obviously casting the AA vote as a threat, at least to white Republicans.
Think about it - "these people" come from "elsewhere," i.e. the scary and crime-ridden (and way too diverse :eyes:) inner city, to screw things up for the regular old (white) Americans.

See, a Deep South Republican like Chambliss knows that much of his support is based on white folks' fear of dark-skinned folks, as much as it is on abortion or the "threat" of "the gays," so this is a clear signal to his base that they'd better get a-votin', lest the "coloreds" (wouldn't be surprised if he still uses that term in private) get the better of them.

18. fascinating dilemma if ever there was one
For 'whites' who care about the future, the nation, the economy, their grandchildren, and even law'n'order etc the sheer criminality of the reactionary rightwingers in the republican party- their almost physical hatred for the America which isn't also like them, and constitutes most of the country- must give pause to any but the stupidest republican voter. The choice is so plain: recovery and possibly even progress versus burying everything in polluted muck which already smells to high heaven and is ruining property values!
