KANSAS CITY, MO. -- On a day when hundreds of strangers will be entering their schools to vote, off-duty Kansas City, Missouri, police officers securing schools for the Hickman Mills School District will not be allowed to work at the schools on Election Day, the department announced in a memo on this week.
According to the memo, off-duty officers are prohibited from performing law enforcement duties at any polling location, including schools. A spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department says the memo reflects a strict interpretation of Missouri law by Chief James Corwin.
A spokesman for the Hickman Mills School District said the district has already taken action to change Corwin's mind.
"Our general council has respectfully asked Chief Corwin to recend the memo he sent out," said John Baccalla of the Hickman Mills School District. "We have one officer in each of our two high schools, one officer in each of our two middle schools and then we have what's called roam officers who patrol the grounds around our three elementary schools."
