Former 49er Steve Young and his wife oppose banning gay marriage (Prop 8)
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 10:41 AM by CreekDog
His wife has given $50,000 to oppose it and they have lawn signs opposing it. Family does not believe in discrimination..."therefore our family will vote against Prop. 8". Young is a prominent Mormon.

Wife of former 49er Young voting No on Prop. 8

Friday, October 31, 2008

(10-31) 22:53 PDT San Francisco, CA (AP) --

Former 49ers quarterback Steve Young and his wife Barbara have posted yard signs in front of their Palo Alto home urging voters to vote no on Proposition 8, the state ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriage.

Barbara Young has also donated about $50,000 to defeat the measure, and says in a statement that the family does not believe in discrimination and "therefore our family will vote against Prop. 8."

...

The Mormon Church has donated much money to the "Yes on 8" campaign.

(the knucklehead and now LA Dodger, Jeff Kent supports Prop. 8, in case you need another reason to oppose 8, there you go)

2. Steve Young (I don't know his politics) did something amazing
He followed an AMAZING quarterback (Joe Montana) and actually came out smelling like roses. How the hell do you do that? It doesn't happen often, but Super Bowls help. :D

Yay for Steve and Barbara for making the right choice here and telling others about it.

4. That's awesome....
A Mormon, former pro-jock. This officially serves as my daily reminder (so often needed even for the most liberal among us) that pre-judging people by stereotypes or even making the most basic assumptions about their beliefs is wrong. I like to spend my days thinking I'm above such stuff, but even if I have the slightest moment of weakness, reminders like these are wonderful things.

6. Steve Young's always been a class act.
Happy to see he not only follows his conscience, but is willing to take a public stand.

7. He's a Mormon and a well known athlete, so this is huge.
I give him and his wife much respect. They've cut against two groups to whom he has a lifetime affiliation: the Mormon church and the world of athletics, both of which are hostile to gays

8. KPIX had this story this morning
They teased it with something like "A San Francisco sports legend is taking a stand on Proposition 8." When they said he was Mormon, I thought, "Steve Young, and he's throwing all his support behind it."

Surpriiiiiiiiiise! :wow:

I'd expect Jeff Kent to support Prop 8. I'd imagine he still wants separate drinking fountains — at least in the Dodgers' clubhouse. I was hoping he'd retire at the end of last season and I'm hoping the same now.
