OMFG One of my nephews just phoned me from a voting line
in Dade County. His dad dropped him and his mum told him he might have to wait for hours. His response was 'a man has to do what he has to do'. He's a volunteer as well and is working with the Obama team from tomorrow until Tuesday. He says this is his birthday present to himself - he'll be 21 on Wednesday. He is soooooooooo excited and I am thrilled. His brother drove down to my folks today and he'll vote tomorrow.

My sis told me earlier that pollsters called her and asked her some questions. She said they asked her about Palin and she told them they wouldn't hire her to clean a bathroom in the bank. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

5. He's a very intelligent young man
He's quiet and unassuming, but he has a very good understanding of politics. I'm very close to both of them since we spend part of summer and Christmas with them almost annually since they were born. I just love lying on a deck chair on their patio listening and chatting with him about his views of life and politics. I am so proud today.

8. Your nephews sound terrific!
We need more like them. But hold onto the bathroom cleaning job at the bank for Poison Palin because she might need it after Tuesday. LOL Consider it a charitable deed.

11. On Christmas Eve 2006
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 04:55 PM by malaise
he curled up on the sofa with me and we watched An Inconvenient Truth, which I had bought earlier in the day. At our family reunion in July, everyone was toasting his mum and all he said was 'my mom - the anchor'. He's a terrific musician as well and has been a Coltrane and Marley fan since he was a kid. He's a warm sweet young man and his girlfriend is lucky. Need I say more!

27. Your family has definitely done something right.
Hope your nephew's interest in politics carries over into a career down the road if he doesn't choose music.

And excellent choices in his music idols - Coltrane and Marley. I especially like John Coltrane. He was talented, complex, and unique. Your nephew sounds smart, well-rounded, and caring. And I'm especially glad to hear he takes voting seriously. :-)

13. Good for your nephew, but I am very disturbed by what you said.
If people are having to wait in lines hours long for early voting, then what is going to happen on election day? I worry that a lot of people will not have the patience your nephew has and walk away the minute they see the line, it is great to see so many people voting but it is shameful that our government does not do a better job of accommodating those voters. There is no excuse for a system that only allows those who are willing to stand in lines hours long to vote, voting needs to be convenient for people and it is our government's duty to provide enough polling places to ensure that no one has to wait in such a long line.

26. Unfortunately many people don't have the time to wait.
I am proud of the people who will wait, but I know many don't have that luxury of time. People have jobs, they have kids, they have personal duties to attend to, people can't always take several hours out of a day to vote. When voting lines get so long it becomes a form of voter suppression because it really does prevent many people from voting.

18. Well, to be honest, he doesn't give a rat's ass about politics,
but he's a life-long Marine and he felt he should vote for McCain out of loyalty. I finally convinced him the only loyalty he should care about is what's best for him and his family, not just because some 72 yr old POW wants to be president cause he thinks it would be cool. Nephew is in one of those upside-down situations with his house and when I asked him which one of the candidates he thought had more ideas about how to help him, he said Obama.

Thankfully, they allowed me to skip ahead due to my disability but I would've stood there for hours if I had to. I will not hand this country over to the nuts that were standing on the sides chanting about Gays and Socialism, is if they had a fucking clue what they were talking about.

And by the way, my birthday was on Halloween. I hope I get a nice birthday present on Tuesday. :)

29. I Don't Think I've Commented...
a lot on your posts but I ALWAYS read them. I think you and your family are absolutely off the hook. Your nephew sounds like he is headed in the right direction and you have been a fantastic guide. Your sister sounds like she has her shit together too. I luv'd her response about Palin not being hired to clean a bathroom. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

30. Thanks
I had some pretty good guides myself. Like our generation, their kids have been part of political discussions before they could walk.
Indeed my sister and her hubby have their shit together. She hates Sarah Palin - says Rethugs at her workplace turned off of McGramps because of Palin. The idea of parading a pregnant daughter and baby father on a convention stage really angered them. Most of them have teenagers or young adults and they're and they're trying to teach them values about the importance of education rather than teenage pregnancy. They don't like the message presented by these so called leaders. Then to add fuel to the fire they realized she was as dumb as a rock and presented herself as a genius. :hi:
