During "The Great War" Gasoline Was Rationed. Why Not Now? |
|
During the Second World War gasoline was rationed. The "Global War On Terror" outpaces WW-II in every way except for number of deaths. Our use of imported petroleum fuels the "Global War on Terror" and enriches our enemies. Why aren't we rationing gasoline now?

2. Because if we made this a war that affected all |
|
then people would question it even faster
They took the lessons from NAM, not any other CRITICAL war in the US
Hell in WW I the children of the well to do put on the uniform and in WW II FDR lost a son too
Since Nam... it is only the poor who pay the price, and the rare misguided rich kid who decices to join for some crazy sense of duty (Pat Tillman)... not diminishing his death, but when are the bush twins suiting up?

3. Oil is the reason for the war |
|
We are not short on oil. Higher prices = more profit for the war lords

If oil was rationed, the CEO's at the oil companies would not make their record profits draining us of our green

6. Oh the prices are rationing the gas |
|
I can't afford to go anyplace at all. I think we use 3 or 4 gallons a week. Poor folks are bearing the burden, as usual. The rich wouldn't suffer with rationing anyway, they'd just figure out some black market method like they always do.
I do agree with your premise though. I think most people put the war out of their minds most of the time. Of course, that's the way it was for working folks in the 60's too, which I think some folks around here tend to forget.

Most of the public transport that existed in the '40s has been shut down.

During WWII there was also rationing of sugar, meat, some fabrics (nylon), rubber (ie tires), shoe leather, and not sure what else. Families were encouraged to observe "meatless Tuesdays." Everyone made sacrifices, even the very wealthy. Their meat ration was the same as everyone else's. No new automobiles were manufactured during the war years. The mint even quit making copper pennies for the duration. In short, there was no way to ignore the fact that your country was at war - it affected every part of your life.

11. The Global war on terror |
|
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 04:18 PM by Retired AF Dem
does not come close to out pacing WW-11 in anyway. To keep it simple I believe there was between 12-14 million people in our armed services during WW-2. We lost 60,000 aircraft during WW-2, not to mention the thousands of ships, tanks, jeeps, and on and on. Why must people try to re-write history so much? The global war on terror, the military is at war, the rest of America is at the mall.
