The passage of Prop 8 is my fault.
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 11:35 PM by Kristi1696
I knew what it was about. I knew that it was appalling. I didn't think much about it at the time, but I knew that even some Dems would vote against it. I heard that there was a big "Yes on 8" push, but I didn't bother to read much about it.

Basically, I figured, "hey, it's California, there's no way that thing is going to pass".

Bottom line, I didn't want it to pass, but I didn't do shit to stop it. I didn't donate, I didn't call, I didn't write. I don't own all of the blame, but I own a share of it.

And to my GLBT brothers and sisters, I'm sorry that I let you down, but I surely did.

And to ALL of my DU brothers and sisters, I'm sorry that I let you down, but I surely did.

Because when one human right is threatened, ALL human rights are threatened.

I fucked up, but I will fight to make it right. I've learned a valuable lesson.

1. I DID work against Prop 102 in AZ, with my money and time.
But I'm still an asshole, according to some DUers, because I reproached them for blaming Prop 8's passage on black people.

11. Probably when the LDS spent big money to mislead them. And Dems, myself included, didn't do enough
To persuade them otherwise.

And this is true for all Californians, not just African American Californians.

17. .
Thanks. I appreciate that.

I've felt so disappointed since yesterday and I just realized that a lot of that disappointment is in myself. A valuable lesson for sure.

6. Me too. I read the posts..
and I didn't believe it. I thought no way would that happen in California. And the initiatives in the other states, I didn't even know of. It is all very ugly, and I was looking the other way.

7. I am outraged by the ignorant indiffferance of these people
Apparently people only wish to defend constitutional rights that pertain to them. It's selfish ignorance and it has thrived in this country like a virus. Freedom does not mean freedom just for the things I think I should be able to do. Freedom is supposed to be for what everyone has a right to do, unequivocally . If I will not speak up for other people's rights, there will come a day when I will lose my own. And when that happens, there will be no one left to speak on my behalf because we will no longer have a voice in our government.

9. In my defense, I will say that I was not indifferent, I was naive.
But the results were the same. I may as well have been indifferent. That was the big lesson that I learned from this.

14. That cannot be our attitude, it must not be
If we start rationalizing things along those lines, we will turn into an even more ignorant society :/

It cannot be brought to that, anywhere that civil rights are being suppressed, it a crime against humanity itself. The words of the Constition, as far as I am concerned, should be upheld and applied to all those in our society, not just those we wish them to be.

18. Me too. I voted against it but WAS SHOCKED AT THE RESULTS!
I guess it opened my eyes -- CA is more than just L.A. I don't know one person who was for this. I'm still stunned at the result.

Sorry guys. I will def help to try and fight to make it right.

19. Kristi, it's the fault of all of us who just didn't pay attention.
Alaska's anti-marriage law went into effect in 1996, and I worked my butt off against it to no avail. I never figured California for falling for the fundy propaganda, either, so since it was California, and not my state, I just figured California would take care of it.

I was wrong, too.

I've sent my donation in to the LA Center via your link. It's all I can do right now, but I'll do whatever I can, whenever I can. What a horrendously corrosive effect these "laws" have on the actual humans who have to live with them! I've seen it here for 12 years, and it's disgusting at best.

Good luck, and kick ass, California - invalidate Prop 8 with all due diligence!

:kick:
