Will Governor Palin Become Senator Palin ?
"It is very possible, but only if Ted Stevens, the Alaskan Senator convicted for corruption, is able to hold on to his slim lead in this election. Which brings us to some very strange scenario"

Would you prefer her as a senator, or trying to run again in 2012, lol.?

8. She can't.
Alaska law got changed when Palin's predecessor appointed his own daughter to his vacated Senate seat. There'll have to be a special election.

10. That'll never happen.
Sarah has some appeal, but Todd definitely doesn't, beyond a very small contingent of snowmachine enthusiasts.

9. According to an "unscientific poll" on our local NBC news
a couple nights ago, 58% of respondents wanted Sarah to remain as governor as opposed to 42% wanting her as senator. And, contrary to this writer's opinion, I'm not so sure that she would win a special election here for senator. There's a lot of dissatisfaction with Sarah now after her time in the national spotlight. We saw a side of her, previously pretty well concealed, that was very unattractive.

Of course, that presupposes that our elections are clean, which clearly seems to be in doubt at this point.

12. blue, can the governor appoint Steven's replacement? I thought
after the Murkowski incident that the law was changed so the governor couldn't do it again. I thought it now had to be special election.

15. There's a discrepancy
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 05:44 PM by Blue_In_AK
between what our ballot initiative said and the final legislation passed as far as interim appointments, but in either case, a special election must be held within 90 days of the vacancy. I believe according to the statute, that the governor may make an interim appointment.

AS 15.40.140. Condition and Time of Calling Special Election.
When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or United States representative, the governor shall, by proclamation, call a special election to be held on a date not less than 60, nor more than 90, days after the date the vacancy occurs. However, if the vacancy occurs on a date that is less than 60 days before or is on or after the date of the primary election in the general election year during which a candidate to fill the office is regularly elected, the governor may not call a special election.

AS 15.40.145. Temporary Appointment of United States Senator. ..
When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator, the governor may, at least five days after the date of the vacancy but within 30 days after the date of the vacancy, appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy temporarily until the results of the special election called to fill the vacancy are certified. If a special election is not called for the reasons set out in AS 15.40.140 , the individual shall fill the vacancy temporarily until the results of the next general election are certified.

------------

The word "may" in .145 would seem to indicate that the governor has discretion as to whether she would appoint an interim person.
