Uproar hits Fla. Confederate flag show

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070317/ap_on_re_us/confederate_flag_2

When artist John Sims sees the Confederate flag, he sees "visual terrorism," and a symbol of a racist past. When Robert Hurst sees the flag, he is filled with pride as the descendant of a soldier who fought for the South during the Civil War.

Hurst walked into the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science this past week and saw an exhibit by Sims, including a Confederate flag hung from a noose on a 13-foot gallows in a display titled "The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag."

Hurst asked the museum to remove the display, along with 13 other pieces by Sims.

The museum, however, announced Friday it is standing by Sims' work, on display since Feb. 26, because it wants to inspire dialogue in the community about a symbol that engenders a diversity of strong responses.

8. But as the discussion in another thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=439412&mesg_id=439412
makes clear, the "hate art" is a rebel flag hanging from a gallows. So if this is "hate art", then it's directed at the usual gang of haters, the "Southern Heritage" crowd.

2. something I always questioned....
The Confederate flag is technically the flag of enemy combatants isn't it? They seceded, adopted the flag, and fought against the U.S...and lost. Why should that be glorified?

You want to show pride in your southern heritage? How about you stop honing on that one period in history of which you should be most ashamed?

Of course, the civil war flag of the opposition would most definitely be flown if this had happened in, say, Singapore or China. :sarcasm:

6. The Confederate flag was not adopted after the south ceeded.
I am just as upset about slavery as anybody. But if people really knew American history they would know that the contention BEFORE the Civil War had nothing directly to do with slavery. It was about the north trying to infringe on the business infrastructure of the south.

The rich in the South, of course, needed the slaves to do the manuel labor in their homes and the work in their fields and were against the North. From all respects the slaves were treated without dignity and inhumane. My relatives were from Virginia, they were dirt poor, they did not have slaves and they worked in some instances right along side the slaves in the cotton fields. When the war started the fought for the south they wanted the North to butt out. But it involved into a war against slavery. A lot of the confederate soldiers deserted and went back to their homes after the North took up the slavery banner.

I don't understand how the Confederate flag if flown properly to honor those soldiers who at the time thought they were doing the right thing should be banished. Of course the Confederate flag should not be used as a racist tool. And that's the problem. People who do not know all the facts about the beginning of the war are stupid to use it as such.

bush convinced most of the country they were doing the right thing to go fight in Iraq. He told them that Iraq and Saddam was responsible for the attack on the twin towers. Now we know he lied. Does that make the honorable sacrifice our military made less for trying to do the right thing. I think people in this country are going overboard with the political correctness and rheotic they spout. There are always two sides to a story and each side has a right to their opinion.
