asked a question. Try reading yourself.

Don't you think white/latino/asian homophobes use the meme that all gay people are rich and white to their own advantage? There are a hell of a lot of people on DU who keep asking silly questions. I bet most of them are white and I wish to god they'd read this.

42. we have no one to blame but ourselves
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 11:57 AM by bushmeat
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/6460/img5166mz3.jpg

As Progressives of all races we still have lots of work to do
to get equal rights for our GLBT brothers and sisters if our
own base, who understand much more about civil rights than
the descendants of slave owners do, came out in droves to
strip away the rights of someone else because some bigoted
preacher told them to.

They clearly didn't see this as a civil rights issue and as
activists that is our fault.

It is not the fault of any particular ethnic group that it
passed but it is surprising at the support it did have
among blacks because of religion. We didn't work hard enough.

Thanks for the pamphlet. I wish we had been distributing
this at all our base polling places.

52. No, I refuse to take the blame for the bigotry of others. The blame is always on the bigot
not the one who "failed to explain well enough."

No one ever had to explain racial equality to me. Not that there shouldn't be outreach and education, but I refuse to blame victims.

Yes, there is work to be done. But blaming the "black community"? Christ.

This is a good opening post, but it won't cure anything.

24. Pamphlet publ. by the National Black Justice Coalition

"The National Black Justice Coalition, www.nbjc.org, continues the dialogue of equality and equal justice with a historic and nationwide forum on Black Church Homophobia."

The NBJC sponsored a seminar in 2007

http://blacknews.com/pr/black_church_summit101.html

Over three hundred people from across the nation will gather to debate the issue of homosexuality and its role within the Black Church as well as provide solutions on how to create a welcoming and gay affirming church.
.........

That pamphlet originally came from the NBJC web site in pdf format. and there are other good pamphlets at NBJC.

http://nbjcoalition.org/

"The National Black Justice Coalition is excited about this historic moment, and we look forward to working with his administration on issues of importance to the LGBT community and African American communities and to ultimately bring about an end to discrimination for all Americans."

22. I'm blaming the select members of the gay community who are taking racist stands.
Prop 8 is horrid, but it is a system-wide failure. If somebody wants to target one specific group for not defeating Prop 8, then I suggest that we blame those people who did such a shitty job in educating and mobilizing against it -- those people with the most to lose.

25. No. Sorry. Incorrect. You can't mobilize against hate and hysteria.
Reason trumps hysteria and that's why this lost. I'm sure the YES side made a million mistakes, but in the end, they said gay people were going to make the bible illegal and convert their children and fear won out. Not to mention that some people are just supremacists and they want to feel superior to others regardless of sense or logic. Hence the "civil unions not marriage" argument that makes no sense whatsoever and itself rewrites the history of marriage in America.

28. Prop 8 is over, but the sentiments linger about gays.
"shitty job in educating and mobilizing against it"

mobilizing against cultural values in time for Prop8?

Our opponents, the wealthy churches, didn't "educate", they simply pulled out the latent prejudices from voters.

Next, we can't go into black communities, as gays, especially as white gays, and ask for a little time on Sunday do do some speaking. We need the black community to do this. It ain't happening when everytime we say that there is a homophobia problem there- we are then called racist.

from a pamphlet published by The National Black Justice Coalition, that works towards an end to discrimination for all Americans.

The National Black Justice Coalition is excited about this historic moment, and we look forward to working with his administration on issues of importance to the LGBT community and African American communities and to ultimately bring about an end to discrimination for all Americans.

50. This is why I think we need to separate the legal act of
marriage completely from churches. Anyone who chooses to marry should go to the courthouse, fill out the paperwork, say whatever vows are required in front of a government representative, then celebrate however they choose--a church blessing, a party with family and friends, or just go home.
