16. We have more churches here

than gas stations (not really, but it seems like it) so my guess is that the RCC and the fundy churches had a LOT to do with the passage. I swear the fundy church bought the "Yes on 8" yard signs by the fucking MILLIONS and just handed them out. Conversely, the "no on 8" effort didn't really get to the Central Valley. It took me FOREVER to get any material and there was no phone banking until the last week-and-a-half for "no on 8" and *I* had to take the initiative to dig and find it.

Fresno County here, up in the mountains. We thought we had moved into the only redneck enclave in Calif. here 7 years ago. I walked into a grocery store in Fresno last week with my Democratic Underground shirt on, and a woman actually left her groceries at the cash register to chase me across the store, yelling--What does your shirt say?! I turned around for her to read it, and kept going.

13. The local Democrats have no organiztion.

Everyone is too busy jockeying to be Chair of this or that committee and the infighting deemed it a complete waste of my time. However, the GBLT community and Peace Fresno are VERY active and provide the organization the Dems SHOULD be providing.

Bummer about Shasta. I was JUST up in Dunsmuir (first time) and LOVED it. However, the McCain to Obama sign ratio was like 100:1. Too bad because it's so beautiful up there.
