Boy, 12, Arrested For Farting In Class- (Florida)
NOVEMBER 21--A 12-year-old Florida student was arrested earlier this month after he "deliberately passed gas to disrupt the class," according to police. The child, who was also accused of shutting off the computers of classmates at Stuart's Spectrum Jr./Sr. High School, was busted November 4 for disruption of a school function. A Martin County Sheriff's Office report, a copy of which you'll find below, notes that the 4' 11" offender admitted that he "continually disrupted his classroom environment by breaking wind and shutting off several computers.

12. here's what happens
teachers are so constrained in what they can do discipline-wise, that they're left with the option of not doing anything, or draconian measures like arrest.

17. How do you know? I'm sure suspension, detention, or expulsion are all available.
As is parental influence.

Why would you think that only inaction or arrest are the only two options?

25. Because teachers don't want to do their jobs
It's easier to call 911 than to make a 4'11" kid go to the principal's office. :eyes:

29. or because they're scared of being sued or physically attacked
I have a friend who teaches high school. He separated two girls fighting and one of them claimed he touched her inappropriately in the process. The claim was proven groundless, but he had to go through a big hassle in the meantime. Now he refuses to get involved--the cops get paid for that, let them do it is his philosophy. Other teachers have been threatened physically by students, and this is in a relatively good school. Then there are the parents who think their kids can do no wrong and won't back the schools on discipline. NCLB and other mandates make it almost impossible to get rid of troublemakers, and that's the real problem, which nobody wants to address. There are kids who have no business being in a traditional classroom setting, and who laugh at traditional forms of discipline.

There are absolutely teachers who don't do their job. But the system also makes it extremely difficult for them to do said job.

2. The arrest will only encourage other 12 year olds.
Geez, like we all haven't had to put up with a teenager farting in the church choir loft.

I wonder why the police went to the school, much less arrested the kid. Don't they have enough to do?

Would the student be in hand cuffs if he simply didn't stop talking in class instead of farting?

5. Surely they have bigger fish to fry
I wonder how much it cost the gov't to spend time on this nonsense. Administrators at the school should have disciplined the kid right there at school if need be.

18. Mondays, like most New Orleanians, I eat red beans and rice.
I put lethal amounts of Cayenne pepper in it, and often add spicy alligator andouille sausage. I'll be a walking, breathing bio-weapon by sunset. :D

Paul Bedard of U.S. News & World Report raised a few eyebrows this week when he went public about President George W. Bush's fondness for…well…farts.

Yep. The President farts - a lot. He farts in front of other White House staffers. He likes to joke about farts, cusses constantly and laughs with glee at the misfortune of others.

31. Ten years ago, in Illinois
we had a twelve year old attempt to murder someone. He failed but did thousands of dollars of property damage in his attempt. Because of his age, no legal action could be taken because we had a infancy law for children under the age of thirteen. He was put in a mental ward of a hospital for a few days and then returned to the children's home where he lived.

That infancy law has been dropped I believe here, but it is just weird to me that a twelve year old boy in one state could get by with attempted murder and another boy the same age in another state could get arrested for farting. (even if it was ten years apart)
