|

1. There will be no nuclear exchange |
|
I may be a pollyanna on this one, but I don't think ANYONE is going to use a nuke again. We all saw what they do. We all know what will ensue if one is launched, even "those guys over there." They're not sequestered on an island like Japan...they'd be blowing up their neighbors, and they know that a first strike will essentially mean the end of BOTH parties, forever. Nukes' purpose it to keep your enemies from fucking with you. It tends to work. No one ever gains anything by actually USING a nuke, only owning them and threatening people with them. Once you use one, the game is over and you don't "win" anything.

2. And there will never be a suicide bomber again because those things kill people. |

4. A suicide bomber is a different thing |
|
He'll kill himself to avenge a death or in thinking that he's helping "save" his people or his cause. Killing himself for that cause gets HIM into paradise. The people he kills don't go with him. That includes his mother, father, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, etc. Annihilating EVERYTHING serves no purpose. Killing YOURSELF brings a hefty reward in the sky. I see that as very different things.

5. Perhaps not a strategic nuke |
|
at least not outside of the nightmare scenario of a false positive mistaken defensive launch, which was the scenario that those pesky atomic scientists thought was the most likely to happen up until the US and the USSR put the trigger guards back on the missiles.
However the failed bush administration rewrote policy on tactical nukes to include first strike use of these weapons if they felt like it, and it is widely rumored that they indeed felt like it in their planning for their preemptive strike on Iran, an attack which thankfully never took place.

It might cause significant cooling, but only for a couple of years.
The total yield would be less than that the atmospheric tests during the '50s and '60s.

Climate studies on the potential effects of "nuclear winter" (which I still think is a bit of a stupid term) have all centered around a nuclear exchange in the range of thousands of warheads. Even the combined entire stockpiles of India and Pakistan only number about 250.
