Cop shoots himself after gun-safety lesson
Ohio police chief injured following bid to teach daughter about firearms

updated 3:17 a.m. PT, Sat., Nov. 29, 2008

MONROE, Ohio - A top cop mistakenly shot himself in the thigh after giving his daughter a lesson in gun safety, police said.

Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber, 54, was preparing to clean his Glock .45-caliber pistol on Friday and didn't realize the gun was still loaded, according to a police report.

Written by officers from neighboring Monroe, the report said the bullet entered Schwarber's leg just above the knee.

When officers arrived, they found the chief lying on the floor with a towel covering his leg. Schwarber was taken to a hospital for treatment.

2. Check, recheck, and triple check that chamber and point it in a safe direction

before pulling the trigger when preparing for disassembly.

11. Glocks in particular have this safety problem.
In that in order to disassemble the pistol, you HAVE to pull the trigger, because the gun won't disassemble with the striker cocked.

And there's only one way to know if it's safe to pull that trigger - pull back the slide and look in the chamber. You could have a round in the chamber even with the magazine removed, and yes, that round will fire if you pull the trigger.

13. I own one too. Definitely gotta keep on your game safety-wise.
They're good guns, but I can see how this accident happened. The cop should have been paying more attention...

16. I undestand, but still have no holes that god
did not give me. You have to be pretty brazen to pull a trigger with a barrel pointed at something you want to keep.

3. ALWAYS ASSUME THE FIREARM IS LOADED
Rule #1 Of Firearm Safety.

Especially with semi-autos, where it is easy to have a round chambered even after the clip is removed.

And never, ever pull the trigger on a firearm unless pointed downrange, away from living targets.

I don't understand why he'd pull the trigger with the slide closed, I always clear a semi-auto by opening the slide, and he'd have to do that anyway to clean it.

I'm glad that he didn't accidentally shoot his daughter, and I hope he recovers.

6. Gun-nuttery rewarded
Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 03:41 PM by Nexus7
How old was that daughter? I looked at a few Google matches, and none of them mentioned the age of the daughter. The concept that gun-nuttery should be passed on from father to children is absurd. It's 2008, let's at least act like it isn't 1700 and there are natives out there to slaughter as determined by God and such other nonsense; and call this what it is - a fine example of poisonous gun-nuttery.

Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 04:24 PM by boozepusher
I think it's a good idea to teach your children about gun safety if there is going to be one in the house. Obviously this guy could use a safety class himself. The best thing to teach a child if they come across a gun is to Don't touch, leave the room, tell an adult.

Edited on Sat Nov-29-08 05:27 PM by boozepusher
If there is going to be a firearm in the house because of your occupation you should make sure any children in the house know not to play with it.

Edit. Sorry, I see you weren't replying to me. I'm still getting used to the format here.

23. Welcome to DU, boozepusher...
Yeah, the post I replied to was totally ignorant. *Everyone* should be taught gun safety, then we wouldn't have ignorant people running around spouting off like gun-grabbers. People who don't like guns are fine with me, but they cross the line when they dare to tell me, or others, what we can and/or cannot own.

I just got done a little while ago teaching my 15 year old son & 12 year old neighbor some more about gun safety. I used a Russian made SKS 7.62 x 39, complete with bayonette, to teach them. My son will be using it to hunt with tomorrow, but I will be right by his side, he won't be using it unsupervised for now.

Education is the key, *not* ignorant hyperbole and reactionary bullshit..

Peace,

Ghost

26. Really, why should everyone be taught gun love?
Really, I mean, what's the bloody point?

Hunt? That's absurd, I live in a civilized place, we have great stores.

Protect my house? OK, occasionally useful. Not so far, but I suppose there could be a situation here and there. Far better to work for a better neighborhood and a strong police force.

Stand up for one's rights? Hahahahaha, where were the gun-nuts when habeas corpus was revoked?

Hay, you want to inculcate your impressionable kids into gun culture, be my guest. I've got no problem waiting for gun-nuttery to slowly die out as we finally take this country to the 21st century.

Really, I mean, what's the bloody point?

So people don't do what this idiot did?

Hunt? That's absurd, I live in a civilized place, we have great stores.

Who gives a fuck where *you* live? Do *you* speak for all Americans? I didn't think so. I live way out in the country in rural Tennessee. Hunting subsists many families here. Poor families that may otherwise not be able to afford to eat every day.

Protect my house? OK, occasionally useful. Not so far, but I suppose there could be a situation here and there. Far better to work for a better neighborhood and a strong police force.

A better neighborhood and strong police force?? See my above reply.. there's 12 homes in *my* neighborhood... and the police station is 15 miles away and staffs 4 officers... I'll depend on MYSELF for protection, thank you very much.

Stand up for one's rights? Hahahahaha, where were the gun-nuts when habeas corpus was revoked?

Are you suggesting/advocating armed revolution? The cognitive dissonance must have your head about to explode. I don't think it's permissible to advocate armed revolution on this board. Maybe a visit from Homeland Security is in order for you??

Hay, you want to inculcate your impressionable kids into gun culture, be my guest. I've got no problem waiting for gun-nuttery to slowly die out as we finally take this country to the 21st century.

Hay is what cows & horses eat around here. :-) I'll teach my children gun safety until I'm sure they have it down pat... then I'll teach them some more. Your constant use of the term "gun-nuttery" only showcases your ignorance and reactionary thoughts about the subject of guns and gun owners. I hope *you* aren't teaching *any* children *anything*... they'll grow up to be warped...

Peace,

Ghost

Yeah, way out there with the cuckoo types, huh? 15 miles from the nearest police station.

OK, well you love your guns, and raise your children up crooked. And I'll continue thinking you're a gun-nut. And your state will continue being red because of attitudes like yours, so who gives a flying rat's behind anyhow?

Oh, and the part about the revocation of habeas corpus? That is addressing gun-nuttery's premise that they need weapons for when the government becomes oppressive. Which it did, when basic rights were revoked, and, as expected, not a peep from gun-nuttery.

Never saw that before. Hysterical! His first mistake was when he borrowed Rick James' hair.

The second? When he invited the wrath of the Gods with his hubris!

BAM!
