I am not a fan of Rahm Emanuel, however, on Charlie Rose last night |
|
Emmanuel made a lot of sense. He said ( paraphrasing) that he was more interested in WHY the 8 Prosecutors were fired.. what were they doing? Why them particularly out of the 93 ?
Rather than just focusing on Gonzales... he wants to investigate the common denominator of the fired prosecutors. He said it appears that very one of them were building cases against highly-placed Republicans for corruption or refusing to spend time and money to go after Democrats who had done nothing. He believes that Congress should not allow themselves to be completely sidetracked by whether Gonzales should resign or be fired. He agreed that it is very important for Gonzales to be held accountable and face the consequences of his irresponsible and possibly criminal behavior, but equally or even more important is to discover the facts regarding the underlying CAUSE of the Gonzales scandal.
It would not surprise me if Domenici and Wilson, who are just two of the 'players' involved, feel a sense of growing optimism now because the spotlight shines so brightly on Gonzales. And why not? They can do what Hastert and others have done all along.. just crawl back under the Republick Party rock and lay low until the freeding frenzy blows over. That would be business as usual for Congress BJ'07 ( Before January '07)
Let the Gonzoid spin in the wind as long as possible.. the longer he retains his position the more we are going to find out about the obstruction and co-opting of the JoD for political purposes.

Sometimes he's on and does his Democratic best, and I'm pleased he's out there as a spokesman. Other times, he's a DLC-spouting mealymouth taking that nice, easy, primrose-laden path to Hell.
And though the point has been made in a lot of places (particularly Talking Points Memo, which is putting down the last payment today and now officially owns this story), it's good to have it out in more venues that the Gonzales 8 were fired for being (1) too interested in prosecuting real Republican corruption; or (B) not interested enough in trumping up voter fraud cases where no evidence existed.

It can be a source of frustration: the guy is definitely capable of doing outstanding work. Other times, he seems too close to the neoliberal camp.
