"ideologue" = person with whose priorities you disagree. |

I'd suggest that we all try to generate more light than heat if I thought it'd do any good.

27. I've found a good indicator on DU to be |
|
"thank god it passed," though that's as much a product of "group think," -a failure to think critically about complex issues and consider a wide array consequences and alternatives drawn from multiple sources- some of which run counter to prevailing sentiments.
Of course, that's also chracteristic of ideologues- but difference is that an ideologue is also immune from evidence and analysis that run contrary to their opinion and larger worldview, before AND after the fact. Republican fundies at the federal agencies who censor or re-write scientific reports from career employees are among the best and most visible (but not the only) examples we can find.

Churchill said, and I paraphrase, that a fanatic cannot change his/her mind and will not change the subject.

16. There is a second half |
|
of the definition of "ideologue," that makes it distinct from advocating an ideology; the word implies the person clings to strict ideology even when it is impractical or unrealistic. It is being used improperly on DU today, though, to suggest that people who are true to their beliefs are impractical or unrealistic.

22. There has been some discussion |
|
today regarding Barack Obama's statement on ideologues. Though I do not have the specific book to quote from the passage, my memory of it is fairly clear. He mentioned two examples: Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter, and made a comment about wondering how anyone could choose to hang around people like them. I do not think that there are a significant number of ideologues on DU.

11. I use the term quite precisely, thank you. Ideologues twist truths to support their ideas |
|
It's a tough thing to be, frankly, as you have to be good at connecting new facts to their preexisting opinions. Sometimes that takes a good deal of creative energy.

12. An ideologue is someone who subscribes to an ideology, or a system of ideas |
|
as opposed to a pragmatist, who thinks that there is no rhyme or reason to problems and they should be dealt with as they come, "structure be damned." It is almost always used negatively, but, hey, we fancy ourselves as 'pragmatists' in the US.
