BREAKING: Blanco will not run for re-election; clears way for Breaux
BATON ROUGE – Gov. Kathleen Blanco will not run for re-election this fall.

The governor summoned staff and cabinet members to the Governor’s Mansion at 4 p.m. to inform them before making the announcement public on live television tonight...

Word of the governor’s decision began circulating widely in Democratic political circles close to former U.S. Sen. John Breaux early Tuesday morning, but sources close to the governor said she was mulling a decision at midday.

Blanco’s withdrawal would open the door for Breaux, her friend and fellow Democrat, to make the race. Breaux told Gannett’s Louisiana newspapers 11 days ago that he would make an announcement within two weeks, but only after talking it over with Blanco. He also reiterated that he would not run if Blanco decided to stay in the race.

3. I think blanco has been a dissapointment as a democrat.
And breaux is no bastion of liberalism.

4. Breaux hasn't been a resident of Louisiana since right after Katrina....
....that should negate his aspirations to become the Governor....he would be a DINO anyway...same as he was as Senator. :nopity:

7. probably for the best...
She never would have won reelection.

I read an interesting passage in Doug Brinkley's book about Katrina. Blanco was about the only public official he didn't crucify for the botched first week, and he mentioned that Blanco was, up to that point, the ONLY person who told Bush NO and stopped him in his tracks. I think she's tougher than she gets credit for.
