If Caroline Kennedy goes to the Senate, I will stand and cheer. |
|
I'll probably also shed a few joyous tears.

1. I doubt she's interested |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-05-08 04:32 PM by SharonRB
but I'd love to see it, too.
On edit: I just heard on the radio that she's spoken to the governor about it, so maybe it's not so farfetched.

2. Yup, reports are that she is interested |
|
I'm thinking Uncle Teddy is talking to her.
Probably the same report you heard is what prompted this thread. Heretofore she's been quite specific in saying she wasn't interested.

|
And the fact that she doesn't want it is a sign she might be a good senator!

9. How about someone who has been elected to something. |
|
I have immense respect for Caroline Kennedy, but there are literally dozens of elected officials throughout New York who would be good Senators. As a Marylander, I have minimal interest, but Governor Paterson has lots of better choices.

11. What, like mayor of a town of 6000? (Sorry, but she has the smarts and education & would be great!) |
|
She is a well-educated constitutional scholar and though never elected to some office she has tons of knowledge about governmental and world affairs -- obviously from a very early age.
And we need MORE WOMEN in all branches of government. With HRC leaving that seat it would be great to have it stay occupied by a powerful, intelligent woman.
If I lived in NY I would be incredibly proud to have her as my Senator.

17. there are plenty of intelligent ELECTED women representing New York |
|
in the federal House and in both houses of the state legislature.
And they would be MORE powerful than a freshman senator, because prior elected experience counts toward seniority in the Senate.

19. This NYer thanks you - I want someone to explain how Caroline is more qualified |
|
than Maloney, Lowey, Velazquez, Hinchey...
Hinchey isn't a woman, but you'd think DU would get behind a proven progressive.

10. Women's Groups Endorse Carolyn Maloney for Clinton's Senate Seat |
|
Looks like this Maloney person is also well qualified.
Women's Groups Endorse Carolyn Maloney for Clinton's Senate Seat "Sen. Hillary Clinton leaves big shoes to fill, and Carolyn Maloney has what it takes. She knows how to tackle big issues and is willing to take on entrenched interests," said Kim Gandy, president of NOW. "She is a tireless advocate for her constituents, and one of the most effective legislators in the House."
"I have worked with many legislators over the course of several decades. Congresswoman Maloney gets things done whether in the majority or the minority," said Eleanor Smeal, Feminist Majority President. "She is an effective legislator who never takes no for an answer when it comes to fighting for women of the world or the citizens of New York."
With only 16 women out of 100 senators, the women of New York, the nation and the world need Carolyn Maloney's determination, tenacity, creativity and keen legislative skills to address the countless issues facing women, workers and families. Maloney has authored and passed key legislation including expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Debbie Smith Act for processing of DNA evidence/rape kits; she has a 100 percent rating from the Children's Defense Fund; is a leader on reproductive issues in the U.S. and internationally; and is a leader in the fight to end gender apartheid in Afghanistan.

Nor do I think a black should necessarily replace Obama in the IL seat.

rather see someone like Nydia Velazquez do it - someone who has a track record, a real down-and-dirty fighter for the people of New York. Not only a woman, but a woman of color.
But what am I thinking - Velazquez is a complete liberal. No, she would never work.

21. Hear!! Hear!! for no more political aristocratic dynasties. Let's find and elect some new blood. |
|
I'm not saying Caroline wouldn't be good. I'm saying this country fought a war to get away from aristocratic rule, so why don't we do all we can to ensure that we do not return to that condition?

23. She could (and should) be considered on her own merits |
|
Her accomplishments are more than enough to be considered.
She has the "big picture" as evidenced by her non-profit work and books.
She know the nitty gritty via the legacy and connections.
I think she would be smart and diligent and if I lived in New York, would be happy to see her in the slot, history and name as side bars.
