Where I live, public transportation is not an option.

In comparison to when I used to live in Chicago. We always took the bus or light rail.

Just got in a teeny bit of light rail.
It's a start!'
But now that we lost our Dem Governor to Obama, that's probably all we're going to get for awhile.

Consider yourself lucky.

66. I do consider myself lucky
Living in Denver makes it not so horrible to not have a car. Even if I had a car and had to go downtown, I am going to drive around and look for parking, pay $7.00 for parking, only to get there ten minutes quicker than the bus? It costs me one dollar with my disability discount to get anywhere in the metro area.

99. I had a 1996 Neon and I LOVED that little thing! It was fun to drive, comfortable,
not bad looking, and handled great in the Minnesota winters. There was that issue with the head gasket, though...although I heard that was corrected in later versions.

217. Wow, they must have really imroved the
later versions of the Shadow then, because we had an '87 (?) and we had a LOT of problems with it (the engine had to be overhauled at 33,000 miles). And it was a dog - hard to get up to speed when you needed to in a hurry.

We later had a '98 Neon and that was a fun little car - zippy and tight and just fun to drive. It wasn't perfect - we had a few problems (fuel pump, A/C) but we still liked it. Now we have an '02 Neon. This one was not in great condition when we got it, high miles, but it is my hubby's drive to work car so it's fine for the job. It doesn't seem to have the same zippy, tight feel to it though.

23. GM (Pontiac Grand Am).
Edited on Fri Dec-05-08 07:29 PM by blonndee
Before this I had a little Sunbird that I drove for about nine years. My Grand Am is a 2001 and despite my NOT taking care of it like I should, it's been a good one that hasn't given a bit of trouble. NOTHING (knock on wood) has gone wrong with it. All I've ever had to do with it is replace a battery and put new tires on.

My Sunbird was a tough little car, too. It started costing me a little money in replacements and repairs as it got older, but considering I was rough on it, it really held up, too. I'm sure someone out there is still driving it. I know Pontiacs aren't supposed to be cool cars, but I've been very happy with both of mine. I hope this one will last as long (and longer!) than the last, because a new one is nowhere in my near future.

ETA: My dad had a Chevy (GM) pickup that he bought used (it already had about 100K miles on it when he bought it) and he put more than 300K himself on that sucker before it finally had to go. He had that truck forever. Good old "Blue." :)

It was a great car. I never had a problem with it. Once, I was rear-ended by a pricey Japanese car (a Lexus or Acura, I think). The other car was badly damaged. The Grand Am was barely scratched.

I've had it since 1997 and nothing major has ever gone wrong with it; the biggest repair was replacing a solenoid once, that's it. Glad to hear more recent models are reliable as well.

31. Pre-owned Lexus
based on past good experience with service and longevity with another used one. . My previous one was near 200,000 when I decided to upgrade to another used model.

I looked at American models, but was disappointed in their service practices. As someone without handy friends or relatives to take me to and from lengthy services or repairs, I LOVE the immediate gratification of their transport service or free loaner for as long as it takes on the spot.

Only Accura came close in my market to meeting this important need on my part.

I grew up in a GM family in Michigan and it pains me to leave the brand, but I MUST have reliability and service., given my personal situation (geezer widow).

I think that by the time I need my next car, they will be there.

31 mpg average over 55,000 miles; gets over 40mpg on long highway trips. We also have a 1994 Honda Accord with 178,000 miles that is still going strong. In the past, I've owned Fords (1974 Mustang II and 1996 Sable) and Chryslers (1984 Plymouth Turismo and 1989 Dodge Daytona) but the only car from a US brand I'd seriously consider now is the Chevy Volt; if it's ever produced.

59. I have an Xd - first new car I've had since 1986.
It's the new version of the Xa. Is VERY exciting to have a car that doesn't make odd noises and funny smells and strange clunks when I go 'round corners . . . and the price was very good - under $17K including taxes/transportation and everything. I like Toyota's process; very no-nonsense, no bickering, all up-front and no pressure to add stuff you don't want. The only "extra" I got (though it didn't cost extra) was the colour. It's red. I've never had a red car. I like it. I like the 5 star safety rating and side-curtain airbags and the center back passenger restraint that slots up in the ceiling when not in use. I like the fact that it is a little car that sits up higher than most, so I don't feel like I'm about to be crushed when surrounded by massive SUV's (still can't see around them, though). I like the way it handles. I drove it down to Arizona and averaged 33 mpg on the highway - it gets about 26mpg around town. And I'm kind of a lead foot . . .

155. That's exactly what my mom said!
She's 87 and mostly blind, so being a passenger is a little freaky for her since she sees in bits and pieces - she loves the Xd because of the height and the seat style. She feels safe.

I bought a Chevy Sprint in 1986 - it had 12" wheels. Twelve. There was only one place in town I could buy that size. The Xd has 16" wheels . . . it's like driving a tank in comparison!

I'd rather do public transportation - but it's non-existent here, so I'll settle for really high gas mileage.

I selected "Other" rather than "GM" because the vehicle was 99% Toyota--only the radio was GM. But it was sold as a GM product. Gets great gas mileage--30 + mpg in town and around 40 on long trips--on an engine with over 100K on it.

Love that quality. And those tiny little low-resistance tires. Poor puncture -resistance and more expensive to replace than a regular tire, just to pick up one MPG.

185. How did you manage to do that?
Did it just fall off? That's kind of odd. My outside mirrors are intact and seem to be solidly placed. However, if I hit one while driving into my garage, I'm sure one might fall off.

I upgraded my tire package. I've been driving on snow and ice covered roads the past week and I haven't had any problems. In fact, I have better control than I had last year when I was driving a Chevy Malibu.

I upgraded most of the features on my Yaris. It was still a very attractive price. I fill my gas tank twice a month and have calculated my mileage at 35 mpg. That is all city driving.

There might be better cars out there but I'm very happy with my choice.

202. The point being it came off under hard cornering
and good that you upgraded the tires, they are just way too small, The Yaris, like all cars in it's class (including the Fit, The Nissan whatever and Aveo) are cheap econoboxes. That's just what they are. Zero sound insulation, point to point transportation with minimal safety protection. They are simply re-bodied Echo's.

Mainly for economic reasons but to be honest, I didn't feel comfortable driving the Prius. I can't explain why but it wasn't a good fit for me. Plus, it cost 10 - 15 grand more than the Yaris. I don't have that kind of money laying around to spend on something I didn't fall in love with.

52. I'm currently driving a '96 Oldsmobile Ciera, which has held up remarkably well.
I got it free -- my parents gave it to me when they got a new car because my old car (a Ford Escort that I bought used) had caught fire and burned up, and I was pretty damn poor at the time. The Olds' had about 120,000 miles on it when they gave it to me.

Since I live in the boonies, pretty much all my driving is highway miles, which is why I think it's holding up so well. It now has over 280,000 miles on the odometer, and nothing major has gone wrong with it (yet). I've had to replace the water pump once, and the alternator twice. The "Check Engine" light has been on for at least 4 years.

But the truth is, if I could have the car I really want, it would be a Suburu. And once the Ciera bites the dust, that's what I'm going to buy -- I'm not quite as poor anymore.

A Sienna and a Sierra. Just a coincidence about the names. He usually drives the truck and I usually drive the van, so I voted Toyota.

I do have a "buy American affirmative action plan" kind of thing, but I liked the Sienna enough better than the US company minivans that it won. It is the first foreign company car I've bought. I don't know if I'll get a van again - if I get a sedan next time (which is the plan) it'll probably be a US company car. I saw several of those I liked.

I've been thinking about replacing it for several years, but I made myself two promises when I bought my first car in 1977 -- when I buy a new car, I will always improve the gas mileage and I will buy American. I'm still waiting for a decent American-made hybrid car, not a truck, not an SUV, not a crossover. Hurry up, Ford, I want to check out the Fusion hybrid!

149. The assembly line for the Fusion supposedly starts up this month!
They're supposed to be at the dealerships in January. Let's hope that there's some entity out there that will offer financing.

I just bought a very gently used 2003 Taurus SEL with all the options that I wanted, including side air bags. I really like it. My previous vehicle was a Jeep pickup that belonged to my late father. It died an accidental death after 17 years of excellent service. I loved it, but the gas mileage was crappy. Hence, the Taurus.

However, my Mom's Buick Century is getting a little old. I'll be interested to hear how the hybrid Fusion works out.

My Swedish bachelor farmer uncle drives a big Ford truck of some sort. He likes it plenty even though he retired from the line at GM.

100. 2000 Saab 9.3 A GM product
Edited on Fri Dec-05-08 09:36 PM by GoneOffShore
Probably the last year that a Saab was still a Saab. GM management actually ruined both the look and feel of the Saab - turned it into an Americanized Euro box.

I've driven "American" made cars and found them wanting: Ride is too soft and they don't corner well.

But then I lived in England for ten years.

102. If the Big 3 would create something without laughable mileage, I might buy from them.
As it is, the only cars they sell with any decent mileage whatsoever are either sold in Europe or recalled and crushed.

I drive a Toyota.

I have a Chevy with a V6 that gets 30 mpg on the highway. A Ford Focus gets 35 MPG on the highway. I would not call that "laughable."

Face it - Detroit churns out crap compared to Japan.

Why don't you go bother someone who can afford to buy a new car in the first place? I certainly can't.

Toyota has been having quality problems. Ford's quality has exceeded theirs. GM's better models are every bit as good as Toyota's cars.

Your thinking about U.S. cars is at least a decade out of date.

134. Apart from replacing the occasional tire, I spend practically nothing on repairs.
"Toyota has been having quality problems."

Not my Toyota.

"Ford's quality has exceeded them. GM's better models are every bit as good as Toyota's cars."

And how many of those could you drive off the lot for 13 grand?

"Your thinking about U.S. cars is at least a decade out of date."

That's funny, since my car's about 10 years old and still runs beautifully after 90 thousand miles.

Don't waste your posts on me. I already told you I can't afford a new car even if I wanted one.

Take your Big 3 cheerleading to someone who isn't broke. It might make a difference.

139. OK, fine, but....
When you finally retire your Toyota, you will owe it to yourself to look at the offerings from Chevy and Ford. Honest.

I'd still avoid Chryslers, except for the minivans -- which are great.

I know there are a lot of Toyota die-hards out there. And for the most part, Toyota earned its reputation. But in recent years (and Consumer Reports backs me up on this) quality really has slipped. Toyota still make some great cars, but that brand is not as bulletproof as it once was.

And yes, I admit that I am a "cheerleader" for the Big 3. Part of that is a function of where I am from. I live in Detroit (the city, not the suburbs) within about 8 miles of the GM headquarters. I pass it all the time when I drive downtown. I also pass a Chrysler assembly plant -- also on Jefferson Ave. -- almost every day.

Beyond all that, much of my family has worked for GM. So, I guess I take this stuff a bit too personally. I just shudder to think what will happen to my home town (and the country) if the Big 3 go down.

146. Maybe, maybe not. It depends.
I'm interested in cheap cars with few repairs, good mileage and nothing more.

My Toyota Echo gets about 30/35 mpg, and cost $13K brand new.

As far as I'm concerned, that's a deal.

I'm not really a Toyota "die-hard" as much as I am a die-hard for cheap, fuel efficient cars that aren't always in the shop.

"And yes, I admit that I am a "cheerleader" for the Big 3. Part of that is a function of where I am from. I live in Detroit (the city, not the suburbs) within about 8 miles of the GM headquarters. I, too, have roots in Detroit. My entire family, except for myself, is from there.

Yet every time I talk to them about the situation, I am greeted with a lengthy diatribe about the horrors of unions, as if Jimmy Hoffa were still in charge. I myself was a union member and will always have union loyalty, so it bothers me.

No matter what I say or do to convince them otherwise, they know the problem is with the unions and nobody else.

It couldn't be that GM recalled and destroyed their popular electric cars, or that the Big 3 only sell hybrids in other countries, or that the CEOs are guilty of borderline criminal financial mismanagement, could it?

No, it's all the unions' fault somehow, and this is a common complaint among those not employed by unions.

The way I see it, Detroit has done a perfectly good job of going to shit even without the Big 3 failing.

If the Big 3 fail, Detroit will be hurt. Temporarily.

But then they will diversify their economy and rebuild. Pittsburgh did the same thing. It's not that hard.

Frankly, if the Big 3 didn't want to go belly-up, they could have actually sold their hybrids domestically.

But that would make too much sense.

154. Let's see, what are you going to do when the timing belt (60,000 miles)
brakes, struts, tie rod ends, cooling system flush (lifetime coolant is only good for 5 years), trans and brake fluid flush (if you don't change them according to the recommended schedule, your warranty and reliability will be voided). ALL of that is "repairs". Or are you one of those people who drives a car till it is on the verge of falling apart, and then sells it or trades it in placing the burden on the dealer or next owner.

THAT is irresponsible ownership.

I kinda like the new Astra, but the storage space is much smaller than my car, so I'm not sure if it'll work for me. One of these days I'll have to go play with one at the dealer and see.

I'm kinda thinking that if that won't work for me, when my car dies I might get a Mazda 5. Room for one more passenger would be nice.

I just read on this blog I occasionally go to that GM isn't making Saturn test cars available for the press anymore (not looking good for them being around much longer).

I don't just know when it's cold and when its hot, I experience them. No longer encased in an air-conditioned bubble in between time spent in air-conditioned buildings. I lost my road rage. And now when I do have opportunities to drive, I don't feel the same hurry that I used to. But I know this ain't for everyone. No hard feelings if it's not your cup of tea. The latter was my mom's car. My siblings voted to let me have the car, because MrSG and I only had one, and it was difficult for us, having only one car and two jobs.

179. 2005 Ford Focus
Edited on Sat Dec-06-08 04:37 AM by kywildcat
went from a 92 Honda Civic hatchback-which I loved, but sat to low to the ground, to the Ford Focus. Just replaced the brakes (rotors and all-but thats because I have a new teenage driver who's still pretty hard on the car).
I miss my matchbox car with all my heart. I drove from northern KY to chicago on a half a tank of gas. repeatedly.
My sister works for Toyota, and my grandfather had a Ford Dealership (which is still in existence, and where I bought the focus). My next car will be a Toyota Prius, but my sister says the wait list even for employees is incredibly long.

edit for spellcheck

182. Mostly bicycle, sometimes VW Jetta
I used to be more militant about avoiding cars but in my old age I've mellowed. I met my wife and since she had a car we share it. It stays parked most days. I'll only drive to work if I have to pick up lots of groceries on the way home, or if it's raining. I do have rain gear and in my single days I'd just bundle up when the weather was nasty. Now I'm not that much of a martyr.

I just wish people would be, um, rational about transportation. Cars can be very useful but they don't have to be used all the time. I honestly don't understand why they're the default option for all trips. Most trips of less than three miles can be easily done on a bicycle, except for the obvious afore-mentioned exceptions concerning weather and cargo, and people that aren't physically able.

Don't get me started about fear of traffic. It just takes some getting used to. I'm afraid of flying but when it makes sense to fly I do it. The more I fly the easier it gets. (Or maybe I can afford that attitude since I'm a relatively large male and I can honestly say that no one's ever intentionally done anything that put me at risk. I have heard horror stories about getting run off the road from smaller people)

that we fill up about once every five weeks. It gets over 30 mpg and we use it to drive to Metro (public transportation), the grocery store, to visit friends in DC and Va and to carpool to meetups & other meetings. I did use it last week to take my husband to work twice but that's because we had an unexpected financial hit and couldn't "load up" his Metro card until Dec. 1.

fwiw, my husband bought it new back in '92 when he lived in California. It's the perfect car for the two of us and the three dogs.

234. So far the only thing we've replaced is the water pump
That is, other than the usual stuff you'd expect to replace like spark plugs (and associated wires), oil, brakes and tires. LOL, we didn't have to change the wiper blades until a few years ago. And since then we've had to replace those about once a year.

The only complaint we've had about the car was from my 6'8" brother. He had a little trouble fitting in the back seat. On the other hand, I don't have to cart him around when he visits, which is really nice and another reason to keep it. ;)

Our little five-speed stick is a great car and very fuel efficient. We've talked about getting another car from time to time but we haven't found anything to beat this one, at least not in our price range. If we ever do get another car it will be electric or a hybrid. In the meantime, we're holding on to this one and treating it like the jewel it is.

I am a car person and lease them because I enjoy having nice cars. I still have a 1981 240D (60hp 4 cyc, na diesel), got a used 07 E320 diesel that my wife drives. Those are great cars.

I drive Fords f250s or Excursions diesels from the work fleet as daily drivers. They carry equipment and people well.

Rotate out sports cars on short leases, currently using a m3. Astounding car. However the corvette (c6-z06) is impressive and of high quality. Not sure what to replace it with next year. Something fun.

213.  Currently driving a Mitsubishi Gallant and a Toyota Sienna
Lost confidence in American made and designed vehicles after have repeated bad experiences with several new cars. The worst was the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Taurus. My bad experiences with Chevrolet and Ford dealers and their service departments I have never forgotten. Bought my first Mitsubishi in 1980 and never again returned to the GM or Ford made vehicles. Lately Toyota gets my highest recommendation. I yet today strongly support giving loans to the big three.

229. Other
I don't have a license. In high school, when it came time to take Driver's Ed, I had a schedule conflict, and I had to choose between Driver's Ed and Painting. I wanted to paint more than I wanted to drive, so...

The next year, they upped the price of the class and reduced it to a fourth of a credit instead of a half-credit. The year after that, my senior year, they upped the price again and got rid of all credit. I still didn't want to drive, so I figured 'the hell with it, I'll get it eventually.'

Five years later, I still don't have it. I get by on my Schwinn Hightimber, a mountain bike that I've put road bike tires on. I use my feet and the bus for shorter and longer distances as need requires.

Honestly though? ...driving scares me... :scared:

bought new.

it's closing in on 140k and has never been in the shop (knock on wood). Our other car is a '96 Subaru that replaced a Toyota small pickup that got totalled.

before I bought the tercel, I'd made an effort to buy American cars - My wife had a Ford Fiesta that was ok at first - then things started falling apart and it was in the shop every other week. The interior door handles broke right off. I had a Ford econoline van than was constantly breaking down. Finally when the power steering unit fell off right in the middle of the street I gave up on American cars.

264. I voted Chrysler for the 2000 mini van is our primary vehicle
but we also have a 1995 Ford F150 that I still consider the best vehicle we've ever owned. Nothing else we've ever owned has been as reliable.

266. Honda, Toyota, and Infiniti. (more)
Edited on Sun Dec-07-08 02:10 AM by herbster
I've had plenty of American branded cars, the last being a 1970 AMC AMX, which was a great car.

The Honda is a 2007 Odyssey (minivan) that gets 27 mpg on the highway. That's better than some so-called economy cars and mini-suv models.

The Toyota is a Land Cruiser that gets . . . oh, never mind.

The Infiniti, on the other hand, gets 35 to 40+ mpg on the highway.

95% or more of my driving is highway driving.

edit: the only one of these made in the US is the Honda, and its build quality is substantially lower than the other two vehicles I own. The design is great, but the paint, quality of body parts, and body integrity (rattles) is absolutely horrible. Not as bad as the 2007 Civic I owned - on that one the paint chipped when a bird crapped on it. I'm not kidding.

268. I voted Toyota but I drive a Geo...
Before I got it I did a little research and found out it's a rebranded Corolla.

Here's my list from first car when I was 15 (much too long ago) to now, thought it'd be fun:

1974 Volkswagon Super Beetle (older than me, actually)

1990 Ford Escort (Great Car, lost in accident - not my fault)

1995 Honda Accord (Great Car also, but was an automatic - lost in Hurricane Ike)

1994 Geo Prizm (Fun 5-Speed, a cheap used car while I save for a new one)

276. My Honda is a 2005 Pilot and runs great, no problems. My
daughter has a Ford Explorer that was trouble from day one. First small things under warranty, then, as the warranty ran out, big things started to happen. She has been unemployed for almost a year and just got a new job. Whenever she gets secure enough, she will dump this Ford and buy a car with a good rating.

We are asked to buy American but when we do, many are stuck with a worthless junk, a money pit.

I feel sorry for the car makers employees but the product leaves a lot to be desired. Why do they continue to produce cars that do not compare in quality with the foreign cars?

The bail-out may be a good idea, I don't know. What will they do, keep producing cars no-one wants while they retool?
