217. Wow, they must have really imroved the

later versions of the Shadow then, because we had an '87 (?) and we had a LOT of problems with it (the engine had to be overhauled at 33,000 miles). And it was a dog - hard to get up to speed when you needed to in a hurry.

We later had a '98 Neon and that was a fun little car - zippy and tight and just fun to drive. It wasn't perfect - we had a few problems (fuel pump, A/C) but we still liked it. Now we have an '02 Neon. This one was not in great condition when we got it, high miles, but it is my hubby's drive to work car so it's fine for the job. It doesn't seem to have the same zippy, tight feel to it though.

Before this I had a little Sunbird that I drove for about nine years. My Grand Am is a 2001 and despite my NOT taking care of it like I should, it's been a good one that hasn't given a bit of trouble. NOTHING (knock on wood) has gone wrong with it. All I've ever had to do with it is replace a battery and put new tires on.

My Sunbird was a tough little car, too. It started costing me a little money in replacements and repairs as it got older, but considering I was rough on it, it really held up, too. I'm sure someone out there is still driving it. I know Pontiacs aren't supposed to be cool cars, but I've been very happy with both of mine. I hope this one will last as long (and longer!) than the last, because a new one is nowhere in my near future.

ETA: My dad had a Chevy (GM) pickup that he bought used (it already had about 100K miles on it when he bought it) and he put more than 300K himself on that sucker before it finally had to go. He had that truck forever. Good old "Blue." :)

based on past good experience with service and longevity with another used one. . My previous one was near 200,000 when I decided to upgrade to another used model.

I looked at American models, but was disappointed in their service practices. As someone without handy friends or relatives to take me to and from lengthy services or repairs, I LOVE the immediate gratification of their transport service or free loaner for as long as it takes on the spot.

Only Accura came close in my market to meeting this important need on my part.

I grew up in a GM family in Michigan and it pains me to leave the brand, but I MUST have reliability and service., given my personal situation (geezer widow).

I think that by the time I need my next car, they will be there.

31 mpg average over 55,000 miles; gets over 40mpg on long highway trips. We also have a 1994 Honda Accord with 178,000 miles that is still going strong. In the past, I've owned Fords (1974 Mustang II and 1996 Sable) and Chryslers (1984 Plymouth Turismo and 1989 Dodge Daytona) but the only car from a US brand I'd seriously consider now is the Chevy Volt; if it's ever produced.

It's the new version of the Xa. Is VERY exciting to have a car that doesn't make odd noises and funny smells and strange clunks when I go 'round corners . . . and the price was very good - under $17K including taxes/transportation and everything. I like Toyota's process; very no-nonsense, no bickering, all up-front and no pressure to add stuff you don't want. The only "extra" I got (though it didn't cost extra) was the colour. It's red. I've never had a red car. I like it. I like the 5 star safety rating and side-curtain airbags and the center back passenger restraint that slots up in the ceiling when not in use. I like the fact that it is a little car that sits up higher than most, so I don't feel like I'm about to be crushed when surrounded by massive SUV's (still can't see around them, though). I like the way it handles. I drove it down to Arizona and averaged 33 mpg on the highway - it gets about 26mpg around town. And I'm kind of a lead foot . . .

Did it just fall off? That's kind of odd. My outside mirrors are intact and seem to be solidly placed. However, if I hit one while driving into my garage, I'm sure one might fall off.

I upgraded my tire package. I've been driving on snow and ice covered roads the past week and I haven't had any problems. In fact, I have better control than I had last year when I was driving a Chevy Malibu.

I upgraded most of the features on my Yaris. It was still a very attractive price. I fill my gas tank twice a month and have calculated my mileage at 35 mpg. That is all city driving.

There might be better cars out there but I'm very happy with my choice.

52. I'm currently driving a '96 Oldsmobile Ciera, which has held up remarkably well.

I got it free -- my parents gave it to me when they got a new car because my old car (a Ford Escort that I bought used) had caught fire and burned up, and I was pretty damn poor at the time. The Olds' had about 120,000 miles on it when they gave it to me.

Since I live in the boonies, pretty much all my driving is highway miles, which is why I think it's holding up so well. It now has over 280,000 miles on the odometer, and nothing major has gone wrong with it (yet). I've had to replace the water pump once, and the alternator twice. The "Check Engine" light has been on for at least 4 years.

But the truth is, if I could have the car I really want, it would be a Suburu. And once the Ciera bites the dust, that's what I'm going to buy -- I'm not quite as poor anymore.

I just bought a very gently used 2003 Taurus SEL with all the options that I wanted, including side air bags. I really like it. My previous vehicle was a Jeep pickup that belonged to my late father. It died an accidental death after 17 years of excellent service. I loved it, but the gas mileage was crappy. Hence, the Taurus.

However, my Mom's Buick Century is getting a little old. I'll be interested to hear how the hybrid Fusion works out.

I, too, have roots in Detroit. My entire family, except for myself, is from there.

Yet every time I talk to them about the situation, I am greeted with a lengthy diatribe about the horrors of unions, as if Jimmy Hoffa were still in charge. I myself was a union member and will always have union loyalty, so it bothers me.

No matter what I say or do to convince them otherwise, they know the problem is with the unions and nobody else.

It couldn't be that GM recalled and destroyed their popular electric cars, or that the Big 3 only sell hybrids in other countries, or that the CEOs are guilty of borderline criminal financial mismanagement, could it?

No, it's all the unions' fault somehow, and this is a common complaint among those not employed by unions.

The way I see it, Detroit has done a perfectly good job of going to shit even without the Big 3 failing.

If the Big 3 fail, Detroit will be hurt. Temporarily.

But then they will diversify their economy and rebuild. Pittsburgh did the same thing. It's not that hard.

Frankly, if the Big 3 didn't want to go belly-up, they could have actually sold their hybrids domestically.

But that would make too much sense.

I saw the car with the stickers upthread. The pickup isn't quite that covered, but the back window (somewhat incongruously) has a gay rainbow stripe, an HRC = sticker, a Gander Mountain Gun Owners Club sticker, a Vets for Obama sticker, a Clergy sticker, and an NRA sticker. I used to be more militant about avoiding cars but in my old age I've mellowed. I met my wife and since she had a car we share it. It stays parked most days. I'll only drive to work if I have to pick up lots of groceries on the way home, or if it's raining. I do have rain gear and in my single days I'd just bundle up when the weather was nasty. Now I'm not that much of a martyr.

I just wish people would be, um, rational about transportation. Cars can be very useful but they don't have to be used all the time. I honestly don't understand why they're the default option for all trips. Most trips of less than three miles can be easily done on a bicycle, except for the obvious afore-mentioned exceptions concerning weather and cargo, and people that aren't physically able.

Don't get me started about fear of traffic. It just takes some getting used to. I'm afraid of flying but when it makes sense to fly I do it. The more I fly the easier it gets. (Or maybe I can afford that attitude since I'm a relatively large male and I can honestly say that no one's ever intentionally done anything that put me at risk. I have heard horror stories about getting run off the road from smaller people)

That is, other than the usual stuff you'd expect to replace like spark plugs (and associated wires), oil, brakes and tires. LOL, we didn't have to change the wiper blades until a few years ago. And since then we've had to replace those about once a year.

The only complaint we've had about the car was from my 6'8" brother. He had a little trouble fitting in the back seat. On the other hand, I don't have to cart him around when he visits, which is really nice and another reason to keep it. ;)

Our little five-speed stick is a great car and very fuel efficient. We've talked about getting another car from time to time but we haven't found anything to beat this one, at least not in our price range. If we ever do get another car it will be electric or a hybrid. In the meantime, we're holding on to this one and treating it like the jewel it is.

I am a car person and lease them because I enjoy having nice cars. I still have a 1981 240D (60hp 4 cyc, na diesel), got a used 07 E320 diesel that my wife drives. Those are great cars.

I drive Fords f250s or Excursions diesels from the work fleet as daily drivers. They carry equipment and people well.

Rotate out sports cars on short leases, currently using a m3. Astounding car. However the corvette (c6-z06) is impressive and of high quality. Not sure what to replace it with next year. Something fun.

I don't have a license. In high school, when it came time to take Driver's Ed, I had a schedule conflict, and I had to choose between Driver's Ed and Painting. I wanted to paint more than I wanted to drive, so...

The next year, they upped the price of the class and reduced it to a fourth of a credit instead of a half-credit. The year after that, my senior year, they upped the price again and got rid of all credit. I still didn't want to drive, so I figured 'the hell with it, I'll get it eventually.'

Five years later, I still don't have it. I get by on my Schwinn Hightimber, a mountain bike that I've put road bike tires on. I use my feet and the bus for shorter and longer distances as need requires.

233. I drive a beat up old 95 toyota (which still runs perfectly I should add)...

...that also gets about 40 MPG, about 2 miles a day to the the Amaya trolley station, take the trolley to the coaster in Old Town, the Coaster to SV and get shuttled to work in propane powered mini-shuttles that out company leases.

I spend about 15 dollars a month on gas, and I get to write my monthly train passes off my taxes.

I guess that makes me a commie detroit-hater. :eyes:

it's closing in on 140k and has never been in the shop (knock on wood). Our other car is a '96 Subaru that replaced a Toyota small pickup that got totalled.

before I bought the tercel, I'd made an effort to buy American cars - My wife had a Ford Fiesta that was ok at first - then things started falling apart and it was in the shop every other week. The interior door handles broke right off. I had a Ford econoline van than was constantly breaking down. Finally when the power steering unit fell off right in the middle of the street I gave up on American cars.

I've had plenty of American branded cars, the last being a 1970 AMC AMX, which was a great car.

The Honda is a 2007 Odyssey (minivan) that gets 27 mpg on the highway. That's better than some so-called economy cars and mini-suv models.

The Toyota is a Land Cruiser that gets . . . oh, never mind.

The Infiniti, on the other hand, gets 35 to 40+ mpg on the highway.

95% or more of my driving is highway driving.

edit: the only one of these made in the US is the Honda, and its build quality is substantially lower than the other two vehicles I own. The design is great, but the paint, quality of body parts, and body integrity (rattles) is absolutely horrible. Not as bad as the 2007 Civic I owned - on that one the paint chipped when a bird crapped on it. I'm not kidding.

276. My Honda is a 2005 Pilot and runs great, no problems. My

daughter has a Ford Explorer that was trouble from day one. First small things under warranty, then, as the warranty ran out, big things started to happen. She has been unemployed for almost a year and just got a new job. Whenever she gets secure enough, she will dump this Ford and buy a car with a good rating.

We are asked to buy American but when we do, many are stuck with a worthless junk, a money pit.

I feel sorry for the car makers employees but the product leaves a lot to be desired. Why do they continue to produce cars that do not compare in quality with the foreign cars?

The bail-out may be a good idea, I don't know. What will they do, keep producing cars no-one wants while they retool?
