Texas Midnight resignation by another GOP
Just over a month after winning re-election and before he can take the oath of office, Paul Bettencourt, Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector, is stepping down from his position effectively calling all of his donors, volunteers, and voters a bunch of suckers. What a wuss.

This comes after 3 other GOP county officials have resigned or are under investigation: Commissioner Jerry Eversole, being investigated by the FBI. Harris County DA resigned in shame over a sexual scandal. Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas is under investigation for misuse of his office (he lost in the Nov election)

2. Hell! Why did he run?
Claims he has an offer in the private sector that just sprung up on Friday afternoon.

This was planned in advance. He would win re-election and then let the republican controlled County Court pick his replacement which is already in the making.

3. according to the link in the article...
Attempts to reach Bettencourt Friday night were unsuccessful, but he e-mailed a statement to the Houston Chronicle, saying he had received an offer during the Thanksgiving holiday "of a private business venture that I intend to pursue."

So he campaigned, won his election, and then bugged out. Sounds like a scam to me.

5. Peasants carrying pitchforks and torches outside his door at midnight
People calling for his head on a stick.

Okay, so I just made that up, but that is what more than just a few Republicans need to wake up to.

4. We had a local school board race in which the incumbent was running unopposed.

The last day for anyone to qualify for the office his friend picked up and returned his papers, and the incumbent decided not to run. The just qualified friend ran unopposed.

Smelly at best.
