Earliest Sunset Day is almost here
Earliest sunset occurs about 12/8 for lattitude 40 degrees North.

Evenings start to brighten from mid-December on.

Alas, latest sunrise doesn't occur until early January, so mornings stay dark for another month.

1. I had no idea about this until a couple of years ago
Has to do with the eccentricity of the orbit, and also the tilt factor of the earths axis. Google "analemma" for more info than you'll ever need on this!!
