Proof our country is totally screwed.
From CNN.

Grief and humiliation winning hands down. Oh wait, low numbers means it's losing.

5. I'm happy, happy, happy when anyone finds their true love . . .
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 12:24 AM by MrModerate
And commits to making a life together.

But do I want to read about their wedding plans? I'd rather flog myself with an electric cord.

Whereas obituaries might be about someone I know . . . as could the mug shots.

10. I'm not old, but many of my dearest friends have died young.
I'm just happy I've escaped their fate, so far. I'd rather read the comics.

11. Naw, there's nothing new about this ...
People have been obsessing over the obits since before there was an intermet. I know of several.

Actually looking at the obits can be cheering if you live in an area where people die north of 80 like they tend to do around here (Portland Oregon). A lot of long, full lives in the Pacific Northwest.

And mug shots? Hell, even I've watched COPS since it came on the air. Crime sells. Raymond Chandler dreamt up the seamy underbelly of Southern California and we still eat it up, years after he died.

The only thing we have about modern times is that we have polls to tote up the opinion and the intermets to spread it all over hell and gone.

12. The obit columns win out because young people don't buy newspapers
and older people are curious and interested.

It's Newspaper Journalism Rule #1, always has been.
