The TV-less transition?
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 11:59 AM by Javaman
I have been rolling around an image of a thought around in my head for sometime now and it only hit me fully when I saw Sony announcing that they are cutting 16k jobs.

Now since there are no TV's manufactured in the US anymore and people are losing jobs hand over fist and a deflationary spiral has begun, what of the grand change over to HDTV?

Personally, I could care less, I don't have a TV anymore, but what of the millions of TV bound watchers out there that need it for whatever reason?

Isn't January the month where the now infamous change over is supposed to occur?

And generally, don't most Americans wait till the last minute to do anything "proactive" (god I hate that word)?

So will there very soon be a TV gap? A further amplification of those have even mores over the have even less in our society?

Maybe this is a good thing, less faux news to spread around.

any thoughts? this is just more of a rumination on my part than anything.

2. It's actually just a switch to digital, not specifically HD
And the real problem is that it turns out that the signal contours are smaller so even if someone is ready for digital they might not get a signal if they are in the B-contour for TV stations. That's the case for most stations in my area so I'm wondering how that's gonna shake out for people who don't have cable.

3. Hopefully the transition will result in people moving AWAY from TV
altogether.

4. it's a good thing. I think turning the tv off will turn a few brains on
I cut out my cable several months ago and while the first few weeks were odd, I now laugh with sarcastic righteous indignation at the people I know who "still watch that garbage"
