You don't have to defend anything on DU.
You can get up, turn the computer off, and walk away from all these people who don't even know who you are.

1. That's true. There are a lot of nuts on DU.
The really rabid anti-Chavez kooks, for example.

Well, if you're going to have a big tent, you've got to put up with the freak show.

6. And seemingly more pro-Chavez kooks. Never mind the Che cheeseheads...
And you're right. A big tent means there has to be even a token amount of tolerance. I've maintained a certain level, or if nothing else avoid calling anyone who disagrees with me a 'freeper'. :7

4. And yet...
...this will be new info for some. One of the funniest, most side-splitting joys in my life is when some cyber-weasel slithers up to me and "demands" something. I walk away and wonder how many times they've checked back to see if I've replied. People who take the bait seldom realize that silence is always the best revenge.

Those who demand, do not know true power.

Edit: but those methods, just like coercion, goes against honoring others free will, so I don't use either.

18. It's this book about how people obtain power.
It's got a lot of history, though his sources aren't very many (the same author wrote two more books about seduction and war that seem to draw on more sources and are more researched, though). It's written from this very amoral perspective which is kind-of disturbing, but it's a very very interesting read nonetheless.

Here's the Wikipedia entry with a list of the laws:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_48_Laws_of_Power

Here's his blog:

http://www.powerseductionandwar.com

He's writing a new book with 50 Cent. Apparently the book caught on in the hip-hop community. There are several references to it in hip-hop tracks over the last few years.

22. The amoral part is a blocker for me.
Not saying I am the best, or even above average on morals. But I try not to do what I would consider immoral if I can avoid it.

So I completely disagree with Machiavelli. And a bunch of other things. I think I skirt my own rules when I know people are mis-perceiving things, I think I rationalize this by knowing it is their own perception that creates their view, and I don't see what they see. I only know others perceive differently.

My problem, is, lets say I know I can totally smash someone. And I could use that for gain. The problem is to do it, I have to become the opposite of what I want to be. So I try to find other things to do that use methods that follow what I believe. Unfortunately they don't pay well, if at all.

So o'well, I go through life really broke, knowing that at any time I can become rich, and tempted by it all the time, yet stay broke.

I don't say others should do this, nor say this is a better way, it is just something I find myself in for awhile now.

You just have to laugh at that. Its so friggen Ironic.

20. I know what you are talking about.
I had that as a management style. I never told an employee what to do, I asked them to do it. If they did not want to they had a reason. Sometimes it even was a good reason, and led to better solutions.

Plus I would try and train them to think by not just saying "do this" "do this" "do this". Instead I would say, "what do you think you should do next". It was funny to actually watch them learn to figure it out. I had it great, within weeks they were looking and fixing problems without me having to find them.

The darker side of that is manipulation, but I don't like that at all. It gives a bad feeling. But there are some people that do use that. I, still today, block them, when I see it. That might be wrong, but heh, nobody is perfect.

Give them the sense that they are to direct their own careers. If they used that here there wouldn't be the woman next to my cube that's on GameColony.com, and the other one next to my cube that sells Amway. Or me on DU.
