Chapel Hill Town Council votes to endorse same sex civil marriage
I continue to be proud of my town and its elected representatives.

On Monday night the Town Council voted unanimously to "endorse and support the rights of same-sex couples to share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities and commitments of civil marriage."

from the article:

Council member Mark Kleinschmidt, one of only a few openly gay elected officials in North Carolina, called on the council to endorse the resolution immediately, rather than asking for advice from staff.

The council endorsed it unanimously Monday night. It will be sent to state and federal lawmakers.

Way to go, Chapel Hill!

Let's see some other towns lead the way.

1. Chapel Hill/Carrboro has always taken the NATIONAL lead in these things

Registration of domestic partners, benefits for public employees, etc. Places like San FRan always get the publicity. There's a raeson why Freeper parents have always NOT wanted their kids to go to Chapel Hill!

I lived in NC for 17 years, and have said that NC will recognize same sex marriage before places like PA. This heartens me. I would live in NC still if it recognized my marriage to Haruka. Maybe I'll at least be able to retire there, eh???

2. Well, well, well!
NC still has that stupid DOMA-like law on the books. This is an excellent first step in getting that repealed. Chapel Hill is only about 45 minutes from where I live. So, Yardwork, if this thing passes, you and yours and me and mine are having that barbecue lunch to celebrate!

3. So they still feel they need to dilute marriage with the word "civil"?
Do they think we'll mistake this for some sort of government endorsement of a religion?

Call it marriage, and run with it.

6. They did call it marriage. Not civil unions. I suspect the wording is intended to reflect
the distinction between getting married outside of a religious ceremony. It is still married.

8. I have a personal stake in this. I'd like to attend the weddings of both my sons--gay and straight-
as mother of the groom someday.
