So it's just the history of the women, right? All those patriarchal catholic fathers and grandfathers and great grandfathers are still there but you'd need to test your brothers to see them....but once upon a time there was this irresistible woman...

Many many untold stories up your tree.
I would be horribly disappointed if I tested all Ashkenazi. I want DNA from at least three continents or I will be so annoyed.
And, if they could magically find just one Cherokee gene, just one...I would smile forever.

Seriously. I am, of course, Ashkenazi.
And human beings were always managing to become better acquainted with each other one way or another. It is simply amazing how we managed to get around without car or motels or planes.
I am not surprised about the Afghan relationship. They're the only people I've seen in National Geographic with those two-tone eyes like mine.
What were you originally told about your ancestry?

that I was irish, german, french, and thats about it. later i did some geneaology and found out there was english in there. but the dna analysis showed that the 90 percent bulk of tribal lineage is ashkenazi. so i am cracking up. I am waiting for everyone in my bio family to wake up this morning to hit them with the truth. I live in a small town in michigan, but we have a jewish temple here..hmmm wonder why i picked this little town... yes, there was NEVER any mention of anything but aryan catholics in my family...so this is delightful and amazing... i guess i can say SHALOM now LOL but heck I say that anyway.. hugs

Sephardic Jews are the ones whos ancestors stayed in Palestine.Askenazi were run out by the Romans.
Thats according to my friend Uzi L. so it could be incorrect info. One thing I did pick up from him is that Sephardics do not particularly care for Askenazis for some reason or another.

this is 30 years ago now: my boyfriend and i had been together 3 months before he even told me he was jewish. i was so ignorant i went to the library and began reading. it's a rich history.
as an aside, i found this on the dnatribes FAQ page: Q: Do my DNA Tribes results prove my membership in a certain ethnic group?
A: Your top matches are the places in our database where your DNA profile is most common. A match with a particular ethnic or national population sample does not guarantee you or a recent ancestor (parent or grandparent, for instance) are a member of that ethnic group. However, a match does indicate a population where your combination of ancestry is common, which is most often due to shared ancestry with that population.
For instance, an African-American might match populations from Cape Verde (an island nation off the coast of West Africa) or Belem, Brazil. Like African-Americans, each of these populations is descended from a recent blending of Europeans and Africans. A Global Population match with either of these populations could be due a similar blending of African and European ancestors. Likewise, a match with a population of Caucasians in Indiana, U.S.A. does not necessarily indicate your ancestors came from Indiana, but instead indicates your blend of genetic ancestry is present within that population.
Nevertheless, DNA Tribes matches reflect a rigorous comparison to living populations as they exist today. Although results do not always relate directly to particular genealogical events, all match results reflect the genetic relations of individuals to the complex texture of actual world populations. For instance, a small fraction of European individuals inherit a DNA profile that is most frequent in India. Indian affiliation is most common in Roma (Gypsy) populations, but can be also found in non-Roma populations throughout Europe, and especially the Mediterranean. (More details available in our global survey of world populations). While this result does not necessarily indicate a great-grandparent from India, it does reflect the small but significant overlap between some individuals in European and Indian populations.
did they include a written analysis of your results/ i'm still searching the site to find out how much it costs and see if i really want to do this. i think i do.

Most scholars believe that only the noble classes and other assorted wealthy people who wished to be like them converted to Judaism. Their presence in the overall history of Judaism is very small. The vast majority of European Jews are not descended from them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars#Alleged_Khazar_ancestry_of_Ashkenazim
